About The Position

The Department of Communication at Marist University invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Journalism to join the School of Communication and the Arts beginning in Fall 2026. The faculty member will have the opportunity to teach core journalism offerings (Intro to Journalism and Newswriting) as well as advanced topics (Press and the Media, Mass Communication Law, Readings in Journalism, and specialized journalism courses). The Department of Communication at Marist houses five concentrations including Journalism, Sports Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, and Communication Studies. This visiting role will be focused on supporting journalism-specific courses but students from all concentrations and different backgrounds will be enrolled. Applicants should have the ability to teach in the field of journalism, as well as the ability to help develop new curricula within the department. Required duties besides teaching and research include engagement in university and professional services such as advising/mentoring students, serving on department, school, or university committees. You'll also have the opportunity to co-advise the student newspaper, The Marist Circle, and the SPJ club, as well as help expand our Community Journalism Initiative.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Journalism, Media, Communications, or a relevant discipline by the time of appointment, and/or extensive professional experience in the journalism industry.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas of research or practice: History of Journalism or Press, International News, Data Journalism, Investigative Journalism, Journalism about the Environment, Politics, and the Media, Press Criticism, Audio Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Media Law.
  • Ability to teach special topics courses that align with their expertise, and courses selected from a range in the Marist undergraduate catalog such as Mass Communication Law, Readings in Journalism, and Press in America.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with students and colleagues representing different cultures and perspectives.
  • An approach to research and creative practices in journalism that is interdisciplinary.

  • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.
