About The Position

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND UNIVERSITY - DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Education Faculty, Visiting Assistant Professor - 3 year contract Position Focus: Literacy Methods, SEI Endorsement and Field Coordination The Department of Education at Western New England University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor, 3-year position, appointment renewable if institutional review guidelines are met. The successful candidate will teach in person: literacy methods courses for elementary licensure, SEI endorsement course, supervise pre-service teachers in schools local to Springfield, MA, and will serve as Elementary field coordinator responsible for making field placements and maintaining collaborative partnerships with local schools. The contractual teaching load at WNE is 12 credit hours per semester or equivalent to four courses per semester, fall and spring. Faculty with field placement responsibilities may be granted a reduced teaching load. The ideal candidate will have at least a master’s in education or earned doctorate in education to be considered for higher level ranking. Applicants should have minimum of three years of K-12 school teaching experience, demonstrated experience in preparation of K-12 teachers, evidence of student teaching supervision, preferably grounded in Massachusetts and familiarity with CAP, and evident commitment to collaboration with public schools. Applicants at doctoral level should have established record of scholarly productivity. The WNE Education Department offers an Elementary Education Major, and Secondary Education majors in, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, and Mathematics at the undergraduate level. All Elementary Education candidates complete a double major selecting from English, History, Mathematics, or Psychology as their second major. Students completing all requirements of an education major are eligible for licensure endorsement in Massachusetts; WNE is accredited by DESE for initial level licensure. The Department also offers an education minor for undergraduates.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Classroom teaching modeling best practices for preservice teachers and contemporary learning theories; implement ED Department Shared Program Principles
  • Clinical supervision of students in their pre-practicum and practicum teaching experiences offering feedback oriented around content, language and SEL objectives and demonstration of MA Professional Standards for Teachers skills, also implementation of CAP.
  • Collaborating with local schools to arrange for appropriate pre­practicum and full-practicum placements, and support/sustain University/local school partnerships.
  • Advising students in areas including: course selection, academic and personal supports/development, ED projects, assignments, and career counseling as well as co-curricular activities.
  • Staying current in the discipline through scholarly engagement, professional development, and participation in DESE sponsored events depending on rank
  • Performing service duties, especially involving membership on committees.
  • Participation in college governance, together with effective teaching, advising, and scholarship and professional development, is required for retention, promotion and tenure in the University depending on hired rank.
