The Virtual Patient Companion is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of patients through continuous monitoring and effective communication. This role requires compliance with established policies and procedures, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with healthcare staff. The companion will utilize software to monitor patients, provide verbal redirection, and summon nursing staff when necessary. The position demands a high level of alertness and the ability to manage multiple patients simultaneously while maintaining a safe environment.

  • Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes.
  • Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory, and accrediting agency provisions as required.
  • Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers.
  • Cooperates with management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork/collaboration.
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the software.
  • Maintains visual observation at all times and verbally redirects patients over a digital 2-way audio device.
  • Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate care based on the individualized treatment plan.
  • Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients.
  • Arranges meal break times and informs staff prior to leaving the monitoring station.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.
  • Seeks help or advice when a patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Participates in collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.
  • Assures patient environment safety and seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard.
  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, and participates in safety programs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • General knowledge of the hospital setting.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 15 patients on one screen.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset.
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Basic computer operation skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Windows experience.
  • Efficiency in multitasking.
  • Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.
  • Previous experience in a hospital environment.
  • Previous clinical experience.
  • Previous direct patient care experience.
