About The Position

The Virtual Behavioral Health Crisis Assessment Counselor (PRN) facilitates patient involvement in the milieu of treatment and education. This role involves performing individual, group, and family counseling, as well as all functions related to utilization review and discharge planning. The counselor effectively communicates and collaborates with all members of the health care team to ensure that patients receive services in a safe and timely manner, while also providing necessary resources and education to patients and their families. The counselor interprets and communicates complex patient and family needs, role modeling caring practices to other caregivers. Additionally, the counselor assesses patients' and families' psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning levels, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping abilities. They counsel patients and families regarding the emotional, social, and financial consequences of illness and/or disability, and mobilize family and community resources to meet identified needs. The counselor provides mental health assessments upon physician referral and therapeutic interventions to facilitate complex discharge planning. They also serve as the point person for issues related to child abuse/neglect, adult/elderly abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence, acting as a liaison between Indiana University Health and state and county protective teams. Furthermore, the counselor provides intervention in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health level II placements.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related area is required.
  • CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) certification may be required.
  • Current licensure or license eligibility in Indiana as HSPP, LMFT, LCSW or LMHC is required.
  • Clinical licensure preferred.
  • Knowledge of the impact of disease processes and human behavior for psychosocial assessments and crisis intervention is required.
  • Knowledge of state and county adult and child protective legal mandates is required.
  • Knowledge of growth and development principles over the life span is required.
  • Maintains principles and techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with community and agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word is required.
  • Relevant health care, mental health or community-based experience is required.
