About the position

The School Librarian serves as an integral instructional partner in the educational program of a public elementary/intermediate school, supporting students in grades 4 through 6. This role focuses on developing students' research skills, information literacy, and appreciation of literature. The librarian ensures access to a diverse and inclusive collection, teaches source citation and ethical use of information, and provides expert guidance tailored to readers at varied levels and interests.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver instruction on research processes, source evaluation, note-taking, and citation methods (e.g., MLA or simplified school format).
  • Teach lessons on media literacy, digital citizenship, and safe online practices.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to co-teach or support project-based learning units and integrate library skills into core subjects.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to meet the varied needs of students, including those with IEPs or ELL services.
  • Select, acquire, and maintain a current, diverse, and engaging collection aligned with state and district standards.
  • Organize and supervise daily operations of the library including cataloging, inventory, and circulation using the district's library management system.
  • Promote reading through book talks, reading challenges, author visits, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Train and oversee student or parent volunteers as appropriate.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive library environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and independent reading.
  • Match students with appropriate reading materials that reflect their interests, reading levels, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Support struggling and advanced readers through targeted recommendations and programming.
  • Participate in school and district professional learning communities and curriculum meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and state library/media standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and report on library usage, budget, and inventory.
  • Advocate for the role of the school library in student achievement.
  • Oversee and run the student newspaper.
