About The Position

The Victim/Witness Program Specialist plays a crucial role in the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, providing direct assistance and advocacy for victims and witnesses involved in the criminal justice system. This position is responsible for ensuring that victims and witnesses understand their rights and the court process, while also facilitating their participation in legal proceedings. The specialist works under the general direction of the Supervising Attorney and the Office Administrator, focusing on trauma-informed services and maintaining effective communication between victims, witnesses, and various components of the criminal justice system.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, communications, counseling, social sciences, or a closely related field.
  • One year of related experience, with the possibility of substituting work experience for up to two years of college coursework.
  • Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License at time of hire.

  • Experience with legal advocacy or counseling is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an advocate for victims and witnesses, providing trauma-informed services and direct assistance.
  • Contact victims to inform them of charges, rights, and court processes, and provide resources.
  • Coordinate meetings between victims and prosecuting attorneys, including initial 'Meet and Greets' and other necessary interviews.
  • Accompany victims to court hearings and transport them as needed.
  • Notify victims and witnesses of trial dates and hearings, and assist with victim impact statements.
  • Assist victims with restitution requests and crisis intervention.
  • Help victims apply for Crime Victim Compensation benefits, including guiding them through application processes.
  • Act as a liaison between victims/witnesses and various components of the criminal justice system.
  • Maintain close contact with Deputy Prosecutors and office staff to keep victims informed about case statuses.
  • Input and update contact information in the case management database.
  • Maintain records and statistics on cases handled and services provided.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements for victims and witnesses for trials, including processing witness fees and travel expenses.
  • Maintain files with information about resources available to crime victims and witnesses.
  • Assist in writing and publishing newsletters and training materials for victims and community agencies.
  • Facilitate bi-monthly Violent Crime Victims Support Group.
  • Coordinate annual Crime Victim Rights Week activities.
  • Recruit and train volunteers for assistance in criminal departments and courthouse information booths.
  • Assist in developing and presenting forums on victim's rights and issues.
