About The Position

The Victim Intake Navigator – Team Lead offers support, advocacy, information and referrals to victims of crime, instituting a consistent human component to help guide victims through the various systems and processes related to their victimization. The Victim Intake Navigator – Team Lead refers cases to the Victim Rights attorney and/or other MLSA advocates depending on the nature of the legal matter faced by the client. The Victim Intake Navigator – Team Lead is the first point of contact for victims seeking assistance from Montana Legal Services Association and provides administrative support to the attorney in the form of document drafting, scheduling, and file maintenance. The Victim Intake Navigator – Team Lead will also function in a supervisory role over other intake navigators with similar responsibilities. The Team Lead will work with the Intake Manager to ensure adequate coverage for the intake workload.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with low-income clients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to access to justice, community-based advocacy, or the high-quality delivery of legal services.
  • Strong program coordination, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively and empathetically with diverse groups of colleagues and clients who have varying cultural backgrounds, perspectives, experience, and expertise.
  • Comfort with data tracking, reporting, and documentation.
  • Ability to travel, occasionally overnight.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supervising remote employees.
  • Experience supervising employees in a non-profit and/or call center environment.
  • An understanding of the civil equal justice legal needs of low-income people, including the unique needs of populations that experience particular barriers to access to justice systems, and of effective approaches and methods for addressing those needs.
  • Experience with grant-funded program reporting and management.
  • Understanding of professional conduct rules or legal ethics (training provided).

Responsibilities

  • Process intake applications from victims of crime and conduct initial interviews by phone.
  • Work with Intake Manager to help assign and manage intake tasks and workflow to minimize backlog and improve response times.
  • Supervise other Intake Navigators and Legal Assistants, including remote supervision of personnel in other MLSA offices.
  • Answer incoming calls from victims of crime in Montana and conduct initial screening of crime victim calls.
  • Determine if there is a legal aspect to a crime victim’s problem and summarize the issue.
  • Create computer files for new clients and new cases.
  • Prepare cases for case staffing review and facilitate case staffing meetings with project staff.
  • Collaborate with the Community Legal Education Coordinator and Communications Manager to conduct outreach and update crime victim topics on MLSA's various websites.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of, and strong working relationships with legal and social service agencies that provide services to victims of crime and make appropriate referrals and collaborate as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with victim advocates across the state to facilitate referrals.
  • Input data from on-line or paper applications.
  • Scan and upload applications and client documents to MLSA’s case management system.
  • Gather information on a victim’s legal needs prior to review by Crime Victim staff or at the request of Crime Victim staff.
  • Maintain calendars in the case management system and schedule advice appointments with MLSA advocates as appropriate.
  • Provide support to Victim Rights attorneys with case work, including but not limited to, document preparation, file maintenance and case closures.
  • Other duties as assigned by Intake Manager, DV Supervising Attorney, Crime Victim Attorney, or the Director of Advocacy.
