About The Position

The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA) provides strategic leadership and oversight of faculty development, advancement, and recognition across Emory University. Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (SVPAA) and serving as a member of the Provost's Leadership Team, the VPFA works in close collaboration with academic deans, associate deans, department chairs, faculty committees, and university offices to strengthen the academic experience and support the professional success of faculty at all stages of their careers. Oversees university-level processes related to faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure, serving as the Provost's liaison to the University Tenure and Promotion Advisory Committee (TPAC). Advises the Provost on faculty-related policies and procedures, including recruitment, retention, advancement, and professional development, and ensures consistency and transparency in their implementation across all schools and units. In partnership with the SVPAA and the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Finance and Operations, the VPFA coordinates the annual faculty hiring planning process, aligning academic and financial priorities with institutional goals. Coordinates the management of faculty data with Institutional Research and Decision Support (IRDS), Human Resources and the Facet management team. Fosters faculty excellence through development, leadership, and recognition programs. Within the Office for Faculty Affairs is the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and the Emory University Emeritus College, along with the leadership team that guides the nomination of faculty for university, national, and international awards, and oversees programs that promote academic leadership and professional growth. The VPFA also administers the university-wide new faculty orientation and manages the selection and stewardship of named and endowed professorships. The VPFA plays a key role in university governance, convenes the Council of Associate Deans of Faculty and serves as a principal liaison between the Office of the Provost, the University Faculty Council and the University Senate. The VPFA also maintains the Faculty Handbook and ensures that university policies are accurate, current, and reflective of institutional values. Collaborates closely with the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance to advance equitable faculty recruitment, retention, and support, and with the Office of Planning and Administration on faculty data management and accreditation matters. The VPFA monitors trends in higher education to inform institutional planning and policy. The VPFA also represents faculty interests in areas related to research compliance and international engagement.

Requirements

  • Credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor, with a distinguished record of scholarly achievement.
  • Candidates should demonstrate substantial leadership experience in faculty affairs, including oversight of promotion and tenure processes, and the development of faculty programs and policies.
  • Strong analytical and organizational abilities, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • The VPFA must be a collaborative and strategic leader dedicated to advancing the academic mission of Emory University.
