About The Position

The Department of Student Development at Greenville University strives to engage Greenville students in services and programs that make lifelong learning possible. Our mission is to empower students for lives of character and service through a transformative Christ-centered education. Reporting to the Sr. Vice President of Athletics and Student Affairs, The V.P. of Student Development (VPSD) is focused on enhancing the student experience, increasing student success and retention, and supporting overall campus engagement. The VPSD will represent the entire Student Development organization at campus and/or community events and activities, while serving on internal and external committees. The VPSD will continually evaluate, assess and make strategic procedural, structural and/or talent changes to improve retention, communication and execution of any areas of concern. Functional areas of responsibility will include but are not limited to student life and residential experience; faith and practice; student health and wellness; talent and career development; student activities; college success programs; student conduct; Title IX (in partnership with People & Culture/HR); fiscal and budgetary control; and overall retention programs and activities. The VPSD will be responsible for fostering student growth and development with an emphasis on Christian spiritual formation, while providing creative, innovative and inspiring student experiences across a diverse student body. It is a priority that the V.P.S.D. reside in the Greenville city community to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion and work with local police, sheriff's office and other government officials.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience in:
  • leading successfully in a student development or other similar context
  • discipling students in the Christian faith
  • recruiting, developing, mentoring, evaluating, and leading people to excel as Christ-centered professionals in student development
  • understanding of budgeting in student development or other similar field
  • Committed to GU's Biblical ideal of diversity and human sexuality
  • Advocate persuasively for the value of Christian higher education offered by GU
  • Committed to following Jesus Christ in personal and professional life
  • Affirm GU's Articles of Faith and Employee Expectations wholeheartedly

  • Demonstrated experience in:
  • leading successfully in a higher education institution as a dean, director, or other manager in student development or related department
  • personally recruiting, retaining, developing, recognizing, and promoting excellent and diverse Christ-centered student development professionals
  • managing student development budgets to maximize revenue and service to students
  • initiating, evaluating, developing and, in some cases, eliminating student development programs to serve students well
  • developing and managing programs for college students that promote spiritual, mental and emotional, relational, professional, academic or physical well-being
  • engaging in Title IX administration and student disciplinary processes
  • working with faculty and academic administrators toenable students to thrive in their college experience

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Executive Cabinet, other senior leaders, and others across the University to develop and implement strategic, entrepreneurial, and data-driven outcomes driven by institutional priorities.
  • Provide leadership in fulfilling the University's strategic goals, including generating excitement and motivating University constituents to collaborate and unite in achieving those goals
  • Develop, manage, and support an effective, highly professional team dedicated to student engagement, belonging, and success.
  • Promote professional development to ensure a well-trained and motivated staff with purposeful of integration of Faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Collaborate closely with the key University stakeholders such as, but not limited to: Food service, campus safety, physical plant, faculty, coaches, administration and staff.
  • Remain informed about emerging issues and trends affecting the student experience and the field of student Development and educate the University and campus partners accordingly.
  • Proactively identify and implement innovative solutions to address areas of needed improvement, to include restructuring roles, processes and/or amending tools when necessary and foster unity within the department.
  • Directly coordinate the selection, training, and evaluation of all departmental personnel in Student Development, including student leaders.
  • Strategically steward and enhance financial resources.
  • Oversee operational excellence across units, ensuring resource optimization and compliance with institutional, local, state and federal regulations.
  • Administer and allocate unit budgets in alignment with University and divisional priorities and policies.
  • Work with Finance to understand budget and implement institutional fiscal requirements as directed.
  • Lead and manage a team of professional staff, that is highly responsive while fostering a culture of professional growth, accountability, humility and innovation.
  • Make critical hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and oversee performance management processes to ensure team excellence.
  • Oversee a comprehensive, contemporary co-curriculum that supports student learning from first year to career.
  • Provide leadership training and advisory support to campus colleagues, committees, and initiatives, fostering a vibrant campus life.
  • Collaborate with institutional stakeholders to develop innovative support systems that ensure student success and retention.
  • Serve as an advocate for student needs and well-being, influencing policies and practices that enhance the overall student experience.
  • Collaborate effectively with Executive Cabinet and the member of each of their respective teams to effectively drive outcomes that are in the best interest of the institution of Greenville University.
