Your Role at SafelyYou The Vice President of Legal & Compliance is the company’s senior legal leader, responsible for overseeing all legal, regulatory, and compliance matters as the company scales. This role partners closely with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to manage risk, enable growth, and build a mature legal and compliance function appropriate for a late-stage, high-growth company. This role serves as the primary legal advisor to the business, while allowing flexibility as the company evolves toward IPO or other liquidity events.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 10+ years of legal experience, including:
  • In-house experience at a high-growth or regulated company or
  • Combination of top-tier law firm and in-house experience
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior executives on complex legal and compliance matters
  • Strong judgment with the ability to balance legal risk and business needs

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a Series B–D or pre-IPO environment
  • Background in a regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, fintech, AI, data/privacy)
  • Experience supporting financings, M&A, or IPO readiness
  • Prior people management or legal function-building experience

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior legal advisor to the executive team on corporate, commercial, regulatory, and strategic matters
  • Provide practical, risk-based legal guidance aligned with business objectives
  • Anticipate legal and regulatory risks associated with scaling, new products, partnerships, and geographic expansion
  • Support Board and committee meetings, including preparation of materials and legal analysis
  • Oversee corporate governance matters, including subsidiary management, equity administration, and corporate records
  • Partner with outside counsel on financing, M&A, and strategic transactions
  • Own the company’s compliance program, including policies, training, monitoring, and reporting
  • Oversee compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., healthcare, privacy, security, financial, or other regulated frameworks as applicable)
  • Act as primary internal point of contact for audits, examinations, and regulatory inquiries
  • Lead negotiation and execution of commercial agreements, including customer, vendor, and strategic partner contracts
  • Advise product and engineering teams on regulatory, privacy, and risk considerations throughout the product lifecycle
  • Develop scalable contract processes and templates to support growth
  • Manage disputes, claims, and litigation, including oversight of outside counsel
  • Establish risk management frameworks and escalation processes
  • Advise leadership on risk tolerance and mitigation strategies
  • Build and manage the legal function, including hiring and developing internal talent as appropriate
  • Manage outside counsel relationships and legal budgets
  • Implement legal operations processes, tools, and metrics to improve efficiency and visibility
