LA28 is the independent, non-profit, privately funded organizing committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The 2028 Games mark the return of the Summer Games to the U.S. for the first time in 32 years and Los Angeles’ third time hosting an Olympic Games and first time welcoming the Paralympic Games. Head of Health & Safety: The Head of Health and Safety will be responsible for the delivery of an overarching health and safety program to provide and maintain the highest level of safety awareness, occupational health and injury prevention across all of the Organizing Committee's operations and functions. This role will be responsible for the development and implementation of an effective Health and Safety policy statement, strategy, procedures, systems and services to ensure that all LA28 operations are compliant to necessary Federal, State , Host City and Venue City requirements. Responsibility will extend to embedding a strong health and safety culture within and outside the organization to ensure a safe and secure Games are both delivered and legacy left beyond the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Reporting to the Chief People Officer (CPO), the role will coordinate and integrate with the health and safety leaders positioned within a wide variety of Functional Areas, notably Venue Infrastructure, Event & Venue Management, Sport, Security, Transport, Logistics, and internally with other People Management/office management sub-functions. In addition to focusing on the key risks, the role will ensure that all workforce, contractors and other stakeholders are role modelling their safety responsibilities, and a strong standard is set.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 12+ years technical experience within the field of health and safety, and application within the US market
  • Experience extended to major event/capital projects involving complex stakeholder environments and outsourced contracts and risks
  • Qualifications in relevant field/ professional H&S qualification.
  • Extensive experience in the development and implementation of Health & Safety (H&S) plans, policies, procedures and systems.
  • Strong and in depth understanding of contemporary and emerging H&S and risk management issues.
  • Strong experience delivering H&S training programs of the highest standard
  • Extensive experience running junior teams of health and safety practitioners, in addition to influencing other verticals and delivery units
  • Varied experience and expertise in assisting an organizations evolution through a number of different phases of H&S implementation.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Leadership: Track record of leading high-performing teams and driving results in complex environments.

  • Available to work onsite in our Downtown Los Angeles-based office
  • Majority of the work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment
  • Ability to travel occasionally to different venues across the Los Angeles region and possibly outside the Greater Los Angeles region when appropriate
  • The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field, or equivalent work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Writing, consulting and communicating a strong Health and Safety statement, strategy, policy, and associated procedures and assurance standards
  • Strategic advisory to ensure that health and safety is consistently raised to the Executive level and the key risk(s) is at the forefront of decision making
  • Conduct a thorough organizational and operational risk assessment(s) to ensure the correct risk based approach is applied for all safe LA28 activity
  • Leading best practice levels of safety and Federal/State/Host City and Venue Cities legislative compliance in an environment of continuous improvement
  • Coordinate and monitor health and safety investigations that may be required following any incident that should occur
  • Work closely with Venue Infrastructure Health and Safety lead to ensure a safe design and construction period across all LA28 venues and supported infrastructure
  • Work alongside and guide the operational functions, such as Event & Venue Management, Security, Transport and Logistics to ensure an aligned and consistent approach based off a dynamic risk assessment. To ensure coverage at ALL Olympic and Paralympic venues, including competition and non-competition venues.
  • Lead Games time planning to ensure there are robust staffing plans for HSE, training plans in place, and systems/tools for incident management
  • Guide and work with the internal People Management and building/facilities team to ensure the highest standards of occupational health and safety and integrate key security incident response plans
  • Lead the development and delivery of the associated training and capability build programs and ensure plans are well set and adjusted for the readiness and testing period for LA28
  • Ensure that a strong communications plan is in place to educate and continuously improve the awareness and safety of all internal and contracted staff
  • Work with colleagues to ensure a full life cycle of HSE planning from operational planning, to readiness, operations and the criticality of dissolution
  • Work alongside and influence central planning, legal, risk, insurance, and other corporate teams to ensure that HSE implications are fully understood by all teams and processes
