The Vice President, Finance & Accounting (Controller) provides strategic leadership and hands-on operational oversight for the Council’s finance and accounting functions. Serving as the organization’s senior internal financial leader, this role is accountable for the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all accounting operations, financial reporting, audits, grant compliance, and internal controls. This is an actively engaged leadership role that combines deep technical accounting expertise with enterprise-wide responsibility, including direct oversight of core accounting processes and GAAP-compliant reporting. In alignment with Council-wide strategy, the Vice President translates organizational priorities into practical financial operations and reliable reporting that support informed decision-making and long-term sustainability. The role reports directly to and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer, serves on the Leadership Team, and plays a key role in safeguarding the organization’s financial health and regulatory compliance.

  • Provides direct leadership, supervision, and support to the Finance and Accounting team, including performance management, coaching, professional development, and delegation of responsibilities in alignment with organizational goals and policies.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to support the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes for positions within their assigned team, ensuring alignment with organizational staffing needs and equity practices.
  • Oversees and actively manages the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring financial statements are accurate, timely, and prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Reviews and approves month-end journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules; ensures completeness, accuracy, and consistent application of accounting standards.
  • Prepares monthly and year-end financial statements and related financial reports for final review by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Establishes, documents, and maintains accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls; ensures consistent application and ongoing compliance.
  • Serves as the primary internal lead for the annual independent audit and Form 990 filing process, coordinating with external auditors and members of the Finance and Accounting team.
  • Oversees grant accounting, including revenue recognition, compliance, and reporting requirements for federal, state, local, and private grants and contracts, restricted funds tracking, and grant-specific profit and loss reporting, ensuring alignment with GAAP and funder requirements.
  • Partners with program and department leaders to support grant budgeting, financial monitoring, and required financial reporting.
  • Leads the development of annual budgets, forecasts, and financial reports, including analysis of significant variances, trends, and financial risks.
  • Provides ongoing fiscal oversight for Finance and Accounting operations, including monitoring expenditures, forecasting financial performance, and supporting organizational planning and decision-making.
  • Serves as the Council’s subject-matter expert for accounting systems and tools, including cloud-based accounting platforms; ensures data integrity and effective system utilization.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements within accounting operations and financial reporting to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Actively collaborates with cross-functional departments and participates in Leadership Team meetings and assigned committee work.

  • Ability to lead a critical organizational function with organization-wide responsibility for financial accuracy, integrity, and compliance.
  • Ability to operate as a hands-on leader, balancing strategic oversight with direct involvement in accounting operations and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to independently and collaboratively identify financial trends, variances, and risks and communicate findings clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across departments while maintaining appropriate financial controls and accountability.
  • Ability to evaluate and improve accounting processes, systems, and documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive financial information.
  • Skilled in using technology to support supervision, collaboration, and virtual engagement across regions.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to take initiative, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality in a complex and dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, and familiarity with database systems such as Access.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible senior-level accounting or finance experience, including leadership responsibility.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with complex nonprofit accounting in an organization with 100 or more employees and multiple funding sources, including revenue recognition, compliance, and reporting requirements for federal, state, local, and private grantors, or in a comparably complex accounting environment such as public accounting or a for-profit organization.
  • Experience leading annual audits and Form 990 filings.
  • Grant management and allocation experience.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting.
  • High proficiency with accounting systems such as MIP, Sage, or comparable cloud-based accounting platforms; OR
  • Equivalent combination of related experience and education.
  • Must reside within Washington State, with preference of residence within our Council region of Western Washington.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and the ability to fulfill travel requirements across widespread regional geography as necessary.
  • Satisfactory results from criminal background search
  • Willingness to maintain Girl Scout membership
  • Must be willing and able to come into a GSWW office or alternative work location as needed or when requested.
  • CPA license (active or inactive).
  • MBA or other related advanced degree.
