About The Position

The Vice President of Development is responsible for advancing NMDP Foundation fundraising goals through the strategic leadership, execution, and growth of principal gifts, major gifts, annual giving, market based fundraising, and the grateful patient program. This leader reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer of the Foundation and serves as a member of the senior leadership team. This role provides enterprise level leadership for individual philanthropy, overseeing the design and execution of integrated fundraising strategies that deepen donor relationships, expand the base of philanthropic support, and drive sustained revenue growth. The Vice President works closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, Foundation leadership, senior leaders across NMDP, volunteer leaders, and external stakeholders to align philanthropic investments with organizational priorities. The Vice President of Development is integral to the successful launch of the next Comprehensive Campaign and to achieving the Foundation’s five year vision of tripling annual philanthropy to more than $40M.

Requirements

  • Proven success leading major and principal gift fundraising programs.
  • Demonstrated experience securing transformational philanthropic support.
  • Deep understanding of donor relationship management and fundraising best practices.
  • Experience working in complex, cross functional nonprofit environments.
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or comparable CRM systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead through influence and collaborate across functions.
  • Ability to balance strategy with execution in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM systems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently; valid driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive fundraising leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams and managing complex revenue portfolios.
  • Experience scaling programs and building infrastructure to support growth.

Responsibilities

  • Owns the strategic vision, growth, and performance of Principal and Major Gifts as core revenue channels.
  • Leads and grows a national principal gift program, generating transformational philanthropic support at the seven figure level and above.
  • Provides strategic leadership to Principal Gift and Major Gift teams, including portfolio design, prospect identification, individualized cultivation strategies, solicitation planning, and stewardship.
  • Personally manages a portfolio of principal gift prospects and benefactors, serving as a senior relationship manager and organizational ambassador.
  • Partners closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, Foundation leadership, and senior leaders across NMDP to align donor interests with strategic priorities.
  • Develops and oversees major and principal gift pipeline management, forecasting, and performance reporting.
  • Ensures disciplined relationship management practices and CRM documentation across all individual giving portfolios.
  • Owns the strategic vision, development, and launch of a comprehensive annual giving program as a core revenue and engagement channel.
  • Establishes annual and long term annual giving goals, success metrics, and performance benchmarks focused on acquisition, retention, and growth.
  • Develops and oversees a leadership recognition society focused on donors giving $1,000 and above, with an emphasis on renewals, donor loyalty, and movement into mid and major gift pathways.
  • Partners cross functionally with Marketing, Digital, and Foundation teams to deliver integrated communications, recognition, and impact storytelling.
  • Leverages data and donor insights to evolve strategies and strengthen the donor lifecycle.
  • Provides executive oversight of market based fundraising strategies, including signature event series, third party fundraising, and volunteer led initiatives.
  • Partners with Advancement leadership to identify priority markets for growth and expansion.
  • Ensures alignment between market based mid-level fundraising, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and annual giving strategies.
  • Oversees the Board of Ambassadors strategy in identified markets, ensuring consistent recruitment, engagement, stewardship, and impact.
  • Establishes best practices for staff partner and volunteer leader fundraising relationships that activate networks and expand philanthropic reach.
  • Owns the strategic vision and execution of NMDP Foundation’s grateful patient program, ensuring ethical, patient centered, and mission aligned engagement.
  • Leads the expansion of a pilot program into a sustainable enterprise strategy connecting patients, families, donors, and other VIP audiences to philanthropic opportunities.
  • Develops a clear blueprint for patient and donor opt in, engagement pathways, communications strategies, and integration across Foundation programs.
  • Creates pathways from grateful patient and VIP engagement into major gifts, annual giving, peer to peer fundraising, and corporate partnerships.
  • Provides strategic direction to internal teams, with execution supported by Marketing and cross functional partners.
  • Serves as a senior leader within the Foundation, contributing to enterprise strategy, planning, and execution.
  • Partners with Corporate & Foundation Partnerships, Distinguished Events, Advancement Services, Marketing, Finance, and Mission teams to deliver integrated fundraising strategies.
  • Represents NMDP Foundation externally with donors, volunteers, and key stakeholders.
  • Ensures donor centric, compliant, and ethical fundraising practices across all programs.
  • Communicates NMDP’s mission, priorities, and impact effectively to external audiences.
  • Ensures confidentiality of all Foundation and organizational information.
  • Leads, coaches, and mentors a national team of development leaders and fundraisers, fostering a high performance, mission aligned culture.
  • Sets clear expectations, provides ongoing feedback, and conducts performance reviews to support engagement, growth, and accountability.
  • Establishes standards and best practices for portfolio management, forecasting, and relationship management.
  • Leads strategic planning processes to create insight driven, action oriented fundraising plans.
  • Owns revenue forecasting, performance management, and corrective action to achieve objectives.
  • Oversees budget management for assigned cost centers and initiatives.
  • Partners with Advancement Services to establish dashboards and reporting to monitor performance, ROI, and outcomes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
