About The Position

We are seeking a highly innovative and collaborative VP of Biosurgery R&D in Raritan, NJ to support our ~$2B business and drive the Standard of Care in intra-op and post-op surgical complications in the areas of bleeding and leak management. This role will be responsible for leading the development and execution of a compelling solution vision and roadmap for the Biosurgery R&D organization based on a deep understanding of market requirements, competitive analysis (both business and technical), pricing and positioning. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record navigating complex matrix organizations and a history of building and leading successful teams of engineers through design, development, testing and launch of innovative product and solution outcomes. Requirements

  • Advanced degree (MS) in Science/Engineering (i.e. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering), or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 15 years experience in Research & Development in a highly regulated industry
  • Significant experience with acquisitions and integrations
  • Experience Leading Leaders where role is to empower, coach and support
  • Good public speaking/external and internal navigation
  • Track record of success in shaping the R&D pipeline for the future
  • Demonstrated skill in developing strategy that supports organizational and business growth goals and in relationship with other businesses (Innovative Medicines)
  • Well-developed business acumen—strong understanding of financial and business implications of R&D strategy, experience in leveraging this knowledge in positioning innovation to create significant, sustained enterprise value
  • Experience and/or working knowledge of the science and technologies necessary to support and drive innovation, uses depth to challenge teams, push innovation further
  • Track record of building strong collaborative relationships, both externally (academic) and with internal functions (commercial leaders, marketing, development) to ensure pipeline is grounded in reality
  • Experience with intellectual property, licensing, and technology transfers preferred
  • Proven track record in making effective decisions to maximize investment payoffs that drive value for the business
  • Effective in navigating a highly matrixed organization with ability to leverage relationships and influences key decision-makers and business leads
  • Dynamic change leader who can engage others in his/her vision to ensure internal and external adoption of disruptive technologies and product platforms to advance healthcare technology and deliver new advances to market.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD. is preferred.
  • Class II Medical Devices experience required; Class III Medical Device/PMA Experience Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Define strategy and shape pipeline priorities in context with the overall MedTech Surgery strategy across all stages of development, from early innovation to commercialization in order to create sustained business value for the Biosurgery business
  • Be a strategic member of the Biosurgery Operating Committee working directly with the President and cross functional leaders to provide technical inputs to priority programs and align resources and ensure execution
  • Develop new technical capability strategy and secure investment to ensure future success
  • External innovation: Lead the technical assessment external assets, ensure technical diligence and successful acquisition/integration
  • Build customer insight generation throughout the organization to be responsive to customer needs to create sustained value
  • Prioritize opportunities across product lines
  • Work cross functionally to deliver innovation and execute projects to the marketplace
  • Select, accelerate, and develop talent within the organization both to continue to develop succession within the organization and to export talent to other areas of J&J
  • Create partnership with internal stakeholders (different cross-functional areas) to manage risks, resources, and trade-offs, to deliver business goals
  • Drive the relationship with external partners (clinical community, global surgeon community, academic institutions, customers, suppliers, start-ups) to discover unmet needs and implement programs to address opportunities
  • Serve as a role model for his/her team and other executives, demonstrating the right values at J&J as a transparent, accountable, dedicated, knowledgeable leader who can successfully manage through ambiguity, embraces iteration and failing fast, and gets impactful work done.
  • Hire, lead and develop a world-class engineering team with deep scientific experts who are changing the future for surgery.
  • Member of the MT Surgery R&D Leadership team and Biosurgery Operating Committee.

  • Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
