About The Position

The VP Associate General Counsel is responsible for supporting the Chief Legal Officer in managing legal and regulatory matters, with a primary focus on marketing, admissions and contract review. This role provides strategic legal counsel and direction to executive leadership and key stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business goals and legal compliance. The position co-leads the legal review of Marketing and Admissions material, manages the division’s legal contract review process, and oversees other business, legal, and compliance projects. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer or Deputy General Counsel, this role operates with significant autonomy and responsibility across a variety of business and regulatory domains.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (required)
  • Three (3) years of experience in a a government, regulatory, corporate legal department or law firm environment (required)
  • Deep knowledge across education law, consumer protection, privacy, labor, civil rights, compliance, contracts, and regulatory frameworks (FERPA, CCPA, HIPAA, GLBA, FTC, FCC, ED, accreditor rules)
  • Strong risk assessment skills, decisiveness in high‑pressure situations, and the ability to protect the organization during crises
  • Significant executive presence, strategic thinking, and the ability to influence decision‑makers
  • Set department-level strategic direction and influences organizational priorities
  • Anticipate complex problems and proactively addresses them
  • Build strong relationships through insight, empathy, and presence
  • Communicate vision and priorities with clarity and inspiration

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years experience in a a government, regulatory, corporate legal department or law firm environment (preferred)
  • Experience working in a public company legal department (preferred)
  • Experience with regulatory issues in post-secondary education (preferred)
  • Experience in multi-jurisdictional organizations (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Guide and advise senior leadership and key stakeholders on complex organizational, strategic, regulatory, compliance, and enterprise‑risk matters
  • Lead regulatory and compliance counsel, including review of student‑facing marketing and admissions materials and responses to inquiries from federal, state, and accreditor agencies
  • Oversee contract negotiation and provide comprehensive legal counsel through research, fact analysis, drafting, opinion review, advocacy, and attorney‑to‑attorney negotiation
  • Manage litigation, investigations, and responses to subpoenas and information requests involving students, employees, and government entities
  • Maintain the company’s intellectual property portfolio, including trademark registrations and cease‑and‑desist communications
  • Supervise and manage outside counsel on significant legal matters with strategic business impact
  • Build strong communication and partnerships across the organization
  • Drive effective and timely legal outcomes
  • Develop subject‑matter expertise in assigned legal areas
  • Other duties as assigned
