The Vice President, Alternative Investments will serve as an enterprise leader responsible for the strategic development, governance, and execution of UnitedHealth Group’s alternative investment platform. This role will establish and oversee a diversified alternative asset strategy across private credit, private equity, infrastructure, and other non-tradition asset classes, ensuring alignment with the company’s insurance liabilities, capital framework, and long-term financial objectives.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, or Accounting
  • 12+ years’ in total investment experience that includes both alternative investments and core fixed income
  • Advanced or Expert in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • MBA a plus
  • CFA certification a plus
  • Experience investing in alternative assets for or on behalf of an insurance company
  • Experience with Bloomberg and Bloomberg Port
  • Solid initiative-taking and ‘achievement drive’ focused professional

  • Solid diligence and accuracy with exceptional organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute UnitedHealth Group’s alternative investment strategy in alignment with overall investment objectives
  • Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and risk in alternative markets
  • Lead due diligence, selection, and implementation of new alternative investment opportunities
  • Build out alternative asset function and multi-year capital allocation strategy
  • Monitor the performance of alternative assets with a focus on relative value, capital efficiency and risk assessment for insurance balance sheets
  • Conduct in-depth analysis on fund collateral composition, credit subordination, stress testing, ratings migration, payment waterfalls, and capital consumption under RBC and S&P capital models
  • Support and collaborate on the management of core fixed income portfolios, ensuring that alternative investments are effectively integrated with traditional fixed income strategies to optimize overall portfolio performance
  • Ensure compliance with investment policy, guidelines and insurance regulations
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement compliance measures
  • Insurance regulatory capital oversight (RBC, NAIC and statutory implications)
  • Lead reporting and asset allocation decisions
  • Key executive on investment committee
  • Build enhanced data and analytics capabilities for alternative investments
  • Ensure robust risk management practices for illiquid and complex investments
  • Communicate strategy and performance to executive leadership
  • Support team and mentor junior investment professionals
