About The Position

This is a full-time position and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees. This position requires working 40 hours per week. Summary: This position performs technical duties to assist the Veterinarian in the provision of veterinary medical care to shelter animals. Essential Functions of the Job: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. This classification is part of the broad-band compensation plan. Duties listed may not be performed by all incumbents, and the level may be assigned based on each incumbent's skills and proficiencies. Assists the Veterinarian in performing surgical procedures on shelter animals; cleans surgical instruments, prepares surgical packs, and prepares animals for surgery; monitors patient vitals during and after surgery. Cleans and fills autoclave and digital ultrasonic cleaning equipment; cleans surgery and recovery rooms. Completes initial medical examinations of animals entering the shelter to identify medical issues in need of attention and to provide for the quarantine of animals as required. Vaccinates animals and provides heartworm and other treatments. Transports sick or injured animals to the veterinarian’s offices as needed. Assists in performing euthanasia procedures. Prepares and maintains medical charts for all kennel animals. Assists in cleaning and maintaining cat rooms; cleans litter trays; feeds and waters cats; cleans windows, walls, and floors; provides new bedding; washes bedding. Cleans kennels and walks dogs. Performs customer service duties and inputs information into animal files. Enforces the laws/regulations of the state that apply to the technician's responsibilities as a member of the veterinary medical health care team. Provides observations of the behavior and conditions of animals, care, and emergency first aid to recovering or injured animals, clips animals' nails, and/or grooms them. Restrain animals during exams and procedures, administer anesthesia, and monitor their responses. Prepare animals and instruments for surgery. Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments prescribed by a veterinarian. Collects and records animals’ case histories. Responds to all duties assigned by the Veterinarian and/or supervisor. Duties may include preparing the surgery room, administering vaccines and medications, obtaining and recording patient histories, vital signs, and weights, and administering and monitoring anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian. Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations to answer client questions and provide education on vaccines and (flea and heartworm preventative). Handles, lifts, and carries dogs and cats whose weights can vary from 1 lb. up to 100+lbs. Coordinates the surgery schedule, initial exams, and daily medications, prepares the treatment room for surgeries, monitors anesthetized animals, performs euthanasia, assists the veterinarian, and schedules vet appointments for any procedures necessary that cannot be performed at the shelter. These procedures may include biopsies, labs, amputations, x-rays, and more. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes database or other computer programs. Maintains current knowledge and awareness of applicable training/education; maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession. Reports to the Director and Veterinarian whenever present.

Requirements

  • Certified Veterinary Technician or individual with a minimum of two years of experience working closely with, or directly under, a licensed Veterinarian
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must obtain a valid Euthanasia Injection certification within 3 months of employment

Responsibilities
