About The Position

Newport Aquarium Veterinary Technician -- Part-Time MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform routine animal health diagnostic procedures in tandem with Veterinarian including, but not limited to, hematology, cytology, fecal analysis, physical exams, water quality analysis and necropsies. Participate and assist the veterinarian and husbandry staff in the scheduling and administration of treatments. Assist the veterinarian in the assessment and prioritization of health cases for effective scheduling of routine visits or emergency care. Assist the veterinarian in radiological, ultrasonographic, endoscopic, anesthetic, surgical procedures, and restraint needs. Maintain all appropriate hard copy forms as well as medical records and comments in the TRACKS database in a timely fashion. Keep work area clean and organized and reports equipment failures to supervisors in a timely way. Ability to organize caseloads/appointments so all animal health needs are met within a timely fashion. Assist the veterinarian in research and contacts within AZA/veterinary community. Maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality to appropriately represent NAQ at conferences or other networking opportunities. Serves as a liaison for the biologists and veterinary team. Comply with safety and security directives, policies and procedures. Maintains compliance with SOP’s that are applicable within the Vet Department. This position has been identified as Safety Critical with authorized operator requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a veterinary technology program or equivalent experience as a full or part-time veterinary technician. Must possess a valid veterinary technician license in the State of Kentucky. One to three years of veterinary technician experience. Experience in a zoo or an aquarium is preferred. Experience with medical record software, TRACKS, and proficiency with Microsoft Office products and standard PC operating systems is recommended. Detailed knowledge of the biology and husbandry of a large variety of fishes, invertebrates, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and/or evenings and holidays in cases of animal health emergencies. REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background check. In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor. No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work. Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop. Ability to work in all weather conditions. No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work. Physical strength, including the ability to lift 50 pounds. Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease). A valid driver's license with a good driving record over past three years.
