About The Position

The Veterinary Technician position at the Office of Lab Animal Resources at West Virginia University is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) role that supports laboratory animal veterinarians and the animal care program. The technician is responsible for daily health assessments, treatment, and disease prevention for various species within the biomedical research program. Requirements

  • Completion of an Associates or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited veterinary technician program.
  • 0-6 months of experience in a clinical/veterinary setting.
  • Experience with the care and use of laboratory animals and knowledge of relevant regulations.
  • Experience with clinical, laboratory, anesthesia, and surgical techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate treatment and veterinary care plans.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with health records and drug inventory tracking.

  • Knowledge of the basic biology, anatomy, and physiology of common farm animal species.
  • Familiarity with laboratory animal care standards and veterinary pharmacology.
  • Skilled in handling and clinical care management of multiple species.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the veterinarian with clinical cases and maintain the health of biomedical research animals.
  • Develop and administer vaccination programs and treat sick animals.
  • Provide technical surgical support, including anesthesia and post-operative care.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures and manage ongoing clinical cases.
  • Handle a variety of species and assess their environments according to regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications and maintain accurate records.
  • Collect and handle samples for diagnostic testing and assist with colony health surveillance.
  • Provide oversight and training for research and husbandry staff.
  • Teach hands-on training and advanced clinical procedure courses for staff and students.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and university regulations regarding animal care.
