Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited institution with a degree certifying Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
  • Must be a Licensed Veterinarian in Texas and hold all current designations required by law to work in the field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a DVM in a clinic, hospital, or shelter environment.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet documents.
  • You can demonstrate the use of standard veterinary equipment, including anesthesia machines, monitors, and surgical tools.
  • You enjoy evaluating student achievement and making provisions to meet individual learning needs.
  • You possess the verbal and written skills necessary to lead a classroom and coordinate effectively with staff.
  • You are able to demonstrate the lifting and restraint techniques required of professional veterinary nurses.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the "Attending Veterinarian" for the program and participate in all IACUC meetings.
  • Examine patients for medical necessities, review diagnostic testing, and communicate abnormalities to rescues.
  • Provide all medical decisions for patients and perform medical procedures within the program.
  • Maintain the DEA license and controlled substance logs, monitoring supply levels and expiration dates.
  • Ensure all medical records are complete and in full compliance with AVMA and USDA standards.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures, practical demonstrations, and daily lesson plans.
  • Monitor lab competencies and confirm student skill levels on checklists.
  • Maintain an 80% student success rate for all classes and implement plans to encourage program retention.
  • Maintain student grades and prepare final evaluations at the end of each sequence.
  • Coordinate guest speakers and community service field trips to enrich the student experience.
