About The Position

The Veterinary Technician III provides for and supervises care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Provides assistance to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students and subordinate staff in clinical techniques, and oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Four years technical experience in a veterinary hospital or referral clinic environment.
  • Working knowledge of veterinary-related equipment.
  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.
  • Computer skills in word processing and data entry.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Veterinary Technician or Animal Health Technician with AAALAS certification.
  • Experience in Higher Education/Research Institute preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Veterinary Assistance Assists appointed veterinarian by doing rounds, sending out email to investigators about health of animals and treating animals.
  • Maintain rodent health surveillance programs at Alkek; including scheduling sentinel shipments, replacing sentinels, collecting and submitting diagnostic samples; reviewing health reports and establishing and following quarantine procedures.
  • Arranging and preparing all needed forms for animal transfers and housing animals for shipment.
  • Performing sanitation assessments as part of the quality assurance program.
  • Oversee surgical protocols requiring anesthesia, surgical assistance and principals of asepsis. (Post approval monitoring).
  • Operations Assumes intermediate supervisory authority for and trains subordinate veterinary technical staff assigned within the clinical service section.
  • Performs annual job performance evaluations for assigned staff.
  • Designs and organizes work schedules tailored to meet programmed needs within a service area.
  • Maintains accountability for inventory control of equipment and supplies within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks on hospital equipment.
  • Oversees and provides clinical support to veterinarian in the delivery and instruction of emergency and intensive care, diagnostic services, and zoonotic disease control, including administration of medications, maintenance of complete and accurate medical records, and collection, preparation and submission of clinical pathology samples.
  • Performs or assists in patient medical evaluation.
  • May be required to assist in the instruction and induction of general anesthesia preparatory to surgery, fluids administration, and replacement therapy.
  • Performs critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed.
  • Assists in clinical research trials to include comprehensive literature searches and data collation.
  • Supervises and performs routine laboratory tests to include packed cell volume, plasma proteins, electrolyte, blood gas analysis, urinalysis, and blood glucose.
  • Assures that all charges for treatments and supplies are correct and entered in the hospital information system.
  • Supervises and provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to insure a consistently clean working environment.
