About The Position

As a Veterinary Technician II , you will be responsible for the care and treatment of experimental and teaching animals, assisting researchers, scheduling procedures, and aiding professional staff at all facilities in Veterinary Medical Park (VTPK). You will help develop, organize, and implement daily activities, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical hospital.
  • Must be able to perform drug calculations accurately.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Responsibilities

  • Mentors and provides leadership to Vet Tech I and student workers.
  • Provides research support and technical services for studies, primarily utilizing large animal species.
  • Administers anesthetic agents according to approved anesthesia protocols.
  • Maintains accurate records of administration of drugs and inhalation agents.
  • Monitors anesthesia and physiological parameters of multiple species or research animals during routine and complex procedures.
  • Performs routine and non-routine technical procedures, including but not limited to placement and maintenance of intravenous and intra-arterial catheters, urinary catheters, endotracheal intubation, stomach tube placement, monitor critical care patients, and research related procedures.
  • Documents study activities.
  • Records raw data and all study findings (including deviations to protocol and SOP), and maintains operational records in compliance with the protocol, standard operating procedures, university occupational health and safety requirements, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations, and applicable international guidance documents.
  • Performs quality control checks on raw data.
  • Provides post-operative and intensive care monitoring and support for research and clinical cases including nights and weekend care as needed.
  • Ensures decontamination of anesthetic equipment, surgery rooms, prep rooms, and recovery stalls before and after surgical procedures.
  • Performs sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Assists Veterinarian, Technicians, and Investigators in treatment, restraint, and general healthcare of animals.
  • Collects blood samples from cattle, goats, horses, and pigs.
  • Performs fecal egg counts, Total Protein, and Packed Cell Volume Tests as needed.
  • Operates equipment such as autoclave, microscope, refractometer, centrifuge, cattle chute, computer, pressure washer and scales.
  • Performs daily treatments for all animals housed at the Veterinary Medical Park.
  • Assists Investigators and veterinary staff in the collection/completion/compilation of animal records to ensure they are maintained in compliance with AAALAC, IACUC, USDA, and OLAW regulations.
  • Produces cost estimates for potential projects.
  • Ensures equipment and appropriate procedures are in place prior to the start of a new project.
  • Assists Manager and Director in the composition, of new AUP’s, AUP amendments, SOP’s, trainings and procedures.
  • Maintains Biosafety Buildings and the animals housed in them.
  • Trains and ensures employees are up to date on entry/exit and cleaning procedures in the Biosafety Buildings.
  • Maintains a system for tracking employee training.
  • Assists Investigators in Biosafety Buildings when needed.
  • Creates and posts Biosafety Signs for projects, Biosafety Manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conducts monthly inventory and orders supplies and pharmaceuticals as needed.
  • Keeps animal facilities stocked with PPE and necessary items.
  • Tracks and reports PPE Usage.
  • Instructs veterinary students in emergency procedures and principles.
  • Provides supervision to students performing emergency procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education seminars.
  • Participates in laboratory instruction and instruction of the clinical skills lab.
  • Observes animals for abnormalities.
  • Assists Investigator with procedures and restraint.
  • Administers medications and special diets.
  • Composes and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performs the Afternoon Animal Welfare Observations.
  • Creates, maintains, and places accurate AUP Cards on animal.
