About the position

The Veterinary Technician II - Operating Room Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the operating rooms within the Designated Pathogen Free Facility (DPF). This includes working with the Materials Manager to order and maintain inventory on surgical supplies and equipment, maintain sanitation of operating room suites, manage set up and break down of operating rooms for surgeries, prepare surgical tools/equipment, and participate in surgical procedures as part of the surgical/anesthesia team. Additionally, this role is responsible for the general care and husbandry of all pigs within the Barrier facility and plays a critical part in the support of all veterinary procedures (survival and non-surgeries, sample collections and necropsies for the xenotransplantation program). All Veterinary Technicians assist veterinarian staff in routine veterinary care of the USDA covered species and assist veterinarians in providing preventive medical care, medical nursing and euthanasia in addition to maintaining animal health records.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences.
  • 4+ years of experience in large animal care and handling.
  • 4+ years of experience following IACUC and research protocols and working with controlled substances.
  • 4+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of operating room processes and management.
  • Physical Demands: Lift 75 lbs to waist level, Carry 50 lbs, Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology or animal sciences.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician - NAVTA Licensed Vet Tech through the VA Board of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of GxP compliance.
