About The Position

The Veterinary Technician in the Anesthesia Section of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital is responsible for providing skilled paramedical support and nursing care, assisting in the training of veterinary students, and maintaining a clean and safe environment for both patients and staff. This role emphasizes the importance of adhering to protocols and procedures in veterinary anesthesia, while also offering opportunities for professional development in a teaching hospital setting.

Requirements

  • Successful completion or current enrollment in the final semester of a veterinary technology program accredited by the AVMA.
  • Must obtain CVT license within 6 months of employment.
  • Illinois Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations and university policies regarding controlled substances.
  • Skill in operating surgical, laboratory, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Demonstrated adherence to strict protocols.
  • Ability to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocols and equipment use.
  • Ability to recognize abnormalities in vital signs and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian.
  • Ability to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs of staff and students.
  • Ability to observe, record, compile, and assimilate data.
  • Ability to explain terminology used in veterinary medicine.
  • Knowledge related to the care and handling of anesthetic waste gases will be taught.
  • Ability to multi-task and work calmly under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of anesthetic agents and their effects on animals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clinicians, staff, and students in conducting physical examinations and handling animals.
  • Prepare patients for procedures under the direction of clinicians or higher-level vet techs.
  • Collect blood, urine, and other samples and prepare them for analysis.
  • Monitor vital signs, food consumption, and other health indicators, noting any irregularities.
  • Change bandages and prepare samples for analysis based on clinician orders.
  • Maintain patient and drug records as instructed.
  • Learn anesthesiology protocols related to medication administration and procedures.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations related to anesthetics.
  • Monitor exhaust gas anesthetic waste.
  • Set up, clean, and maintain procedural areas and laboratories.
  • Operate and maintain anesthesiology equipment and instruments for both large and small animals.
  • Assist in the surgical area with basic duties, such as clean-up and locating items.
  • Maintain supplies necessary for the anesthesia section.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining equipment and instruments.
  • Assist in training veterinary technician students and clinical year vet students.
  • Provide after-hours, on-call anesthesia to large and small animal patients on a rotating basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
