About The Position

The Veterinary Technician Assistant at South Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology (STVO) plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and technicians in providing high-quality care to animal patients. Requirements

  • Knowledge of pet care and animal restraint techniques.
  • Ability to take vital signs and recognize signs of pain in animals.
  • Proficiency in English, including grammar and composition.
  • Entry-level experience in a veterinary setting is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and accept direction on assignments.
  • Critical thinking skills to evaluate solutions and approaches.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in veterinary ophthalmology is a plus.
  • Familiarity with veterinary medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Greet clients/patients in a friendly manner.
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms and treatment areas, ensuring cleanliness and availability of supplies.
  • Assist doctors and technicians with ophthalmology exams, including restraining pets when necessary.
  • Assist with medical and surgical procedures, including patient preparation and monitoring during recovery.
  • Refill medications requested by clients under the direction of a doctor.
  • Properly invoice prescriptions to maintain inventory.
  • Assist with restocking the pharmacy as needed, excluding controlled drugs.
  • Assist pharmacy technician with deliveries and stocking of new supplies.
  • Update client/patient files as necessary.
  • Obtain patient weight and take vital signs, including temperature, pulse, and respiration.
  • Recognize signs of pain and discomfort in animals.
  • Keep in-hospital patients comfortable and ensure cleanliness of their cages.
  • Administer treatments to patients as directed by a doctor or treatment sheet.
  • Walk patients outside for restroom breaks as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the hospital, including laundry, kennel area, and treatment area.
  • Provide specialized nursing care to injured or ill patients.
  • Prepare instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Support the front office as necessary.
  • Make suggestions to improve clinical and surgical protocols.
  • Attend continuing education to enhance knowledge of ophthalmology.
  • Engage in team meetings and assist with surgical instrument cleaning and sterilization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
