About The Position

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University (SSVM) invites applications for Veterinary Skills Lab Assistants. This role will report to the Director of Veterinary Clinical Skills and will be expected to assist in the development and delivery of training activities, protocols, and assessments to be used in skills training on models and live animals. In addition, this position will be responsible for many aspects of maintaining the clinical skills lab, including inventory, equipment, room set-up and break-down, scheduling, model building and repair. The successful candidate will have the ability to demonstrate: Veterinary technical skills applicable to a clinical practice setting such as: venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, etc. A creative and innovative mindset to be able to "think outside the box". Efficient problem-solving skills. Experience in hand-tool use, building, mixed crafts, and/or educational model development. A commitment to high-quality, clinical education and coaching of future veterinarians. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Dedication to contributing to a supportive and collaborative working and learning environment. Exceptional organizational and leadership skills. Flexibility and adaptability.

Requirements

  • One (1) year experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician.
  • Experience training and coaching veterinary technicians, assistants and/or students.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in veterinary clinical practice.
  • Demonstrable technical skills such as IV catheter placement, venipuncture, medication administration, safe restraint and handling.
  • Completion of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technology program, VTS or equivalent degree.
  • Experience with multiple types of species (e.g. small animal, production animal, equine, exotics).
  • Experience with inventory or equipment management.
  • Fear-free handling certification.
  • Willing to work flexible hours (days, swing or overnight) and weekends as needed.
  • Previous experience working in a teaching environment.
  • Previous experience working in an emergency or urgent care veterinary practice.
  • Adaptable to a fast-growing and developing workplace.
  • Excellent understanding of medical terminology, medications, calculations, and common emergency procedures.
  • Excellence and interest in developing interpersonal skills in relation to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage clinical skills lab space for course delivery, practice sessions, and skills testing.
  • Assist faculty with planning, support, and delivery of clinical skills training on models and live animals.
  • Assist with, develop, and deliver essential skills-training activities, including assessments.
  • Coordinate with outside partners for live animal handling activities.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and models.
  • Create models and coordinate repairs.
  • Foster and sustain a friendly and collegial teaching environment, promoting collaboration and excellence in education.
  • Perform other related duties or projects as assigned to support the SSVM mission.
