At Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (AVES), we're growing rapidly—adding new doctors, expanding services, and launching departments—as we prepare to move into our brand-new, state-of-the-art 45,000 sq. ft. hospital. As part of our growth, we're hiring for multiple technician and assistant roles across departments. We're seeking highly skilled, self-motivated, and team-oriented professionals who are passionate about delivering exceptional care in advanced veterinary medicine Overview: The Laboratory Technician plays a vital role in supporting patient care by maintaining the hospital laboratory and ensuring accurate, timely diagnostic services. The Lab Tech is responsible for maintaining quality control standards, overseeing laboratory workflows, and supporting clinicians and technicians with specimen processing. This position requires excellent time management, strong technical knowledge, and a commitment to service excellence. As a visible and essential member of the clinical team, the Lab Tech directly contributes to patient outcomes and overall client satisfaction.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory or veterinary setting required.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow lab protocols.
  • Professional, dependable, and calm under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask with a team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy with willingness to learn software systems (e.g., EzyVet, Smart Flow).
  • Proficiency in administrative tasks, documentation, and computer programs (Microsoft Office).
  • Laboratory science fundamentals, including test purposes and result interpretation.
  • Familiarity with veterinary clinic operations and confidentiality standards.
  • Professional appearance and adherence to hospital dress code.
  • Must be able to submit to drug screening as part of a drug-free workplace policy.

  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Technology or related field preferred.
  • Certification (RVT, CVT, LVT, CVA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and process specimens (blood, urine, fecal, skin scrapings, cytology, smears).
  • Perform lab tests: platelet counts, differentials, urinalysis, blood typing/cross-matching.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot lab equipment.
  • Perform in-house lab work; package and ship send-out tests.
  • Serve as staff resource on lab services; maintain test reference lists.
  • Verify billing for outside labs.
  • Research new equipment, tests, labs, pricing, and support AVES research projects.
  • Share lab updates with staff; maintain vendor relationships.
  • Manage lab supplies, tests, forms, and sample storage; assist with quarterly inventory.
  • Clean and stock lab areas daily; ensure materials are organized.
  • Attend all required meetings and training sessions.
  • Strong client service focus; professional communication skills.
  • Proficient with software (Ezyvet, Smartflow, etc.) and administrative tasks.
  • Knowledgeable in lab test purposes, results, and alerts.
  • Adaptable, emotionally aware, and supportive of clinic workflows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patients, clients, and hospital operations. Report concerns to management or HR.
