Requirements

  • Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities
  • Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong ability to multi-task, delegate and oversee daily workflow
  • Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine
  • Strong work ethic and professionalism

Responsibilities

  • Identify sudden or minor changes in a patient’s medical condition
  • Perform and document ongoing assessments including observation, physical examination, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention
  • Participate in the identification and clarification of patient needs, as evidenced by participation in multidisciplinary care planning, to achieve optimal patient outcomes
  • Demonstrate sound decision-making in emergency scenarios based on patient conditions such as vital signs, patient presentation, and assessments
  • Think critically in order to learn and maintain a high level of patient care
  • Proficient IV catheter placement; Use and maintain IV pumps
  • Understand and carry out written and oral directions
  • Proficient and accurate drug calculations and administration
  • Provide quality nursing and husbandry care of patients
  • Strong working knowledge of veterinary procedures and pharmacology
  • Perform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labs, as needed when lab tech is not available
  • Report diagnostic testing results to veterinarians
  • Perform and/or participate in all other diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, ECG, BP, and glucose monitoring
  • Provide nursing care for in-hospital patients including all DVM requested treatments, diagnostics, and medications
  • Accurately and completely record all treatments
  • Perform client callbacks as necessary
  • Maintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians
  • Actively engage in Rounds
  • Monitor anesthesia utilizing equipment such as pulse oximeter and electrocardiogram
  • Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records
  • Maintain cleanliness of ICU, working and patient areas
  • Log controlled drugs
  • Use the inventory module in veterinary practice-management software
  • Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area
  • Follow OSHA requirements and health and safety protocols
  • Be proficient in using veterinary practice-management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless)
  • Assist Client Administrators as necessary
  • Attend staff and individual meetings as scheduled
  • Participate positively in all group sizes
  • Refrain from participating in gossip and lead by example
  • Support team members by assisting other areas and being receptive to feedback and suggestions
  • Engage in active problem-solving vs. problem-identifying
  • Make suggestions related to client/patient service improvements and hospital efficiency
  • Help teammates grow by teaching processes and techniques used in the ICU
