Work Unit | Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students. The Western Slope Branch Laboratory is heavily involved in agricultural activities and works closely with livestock producers along with their local veterinarians in the management, care, and prevention of diseases in livestock. In addition, the laboratory serves companion animal owners and other animal services such as Parks and Wildlife, law enforcement, and Animal Control in disease investigation and diagnosis. The laboratory and its staff play an integral role in ensuring the safety of food production, the rapid and accurate diagnosis of zoonotic disease, and the interface of human and animal health.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)
  • Valid Driver’s License - Must possess or obtain a valid driver’s license by the employment start date and maintain such in good standing for duration of active employment.
  • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • Shift Work - CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory does not follow standard University Holiday Schedule due to the nature of the business. Monday through Friday is typical schedule but rotation of holidays is required and occasional Saturdays as needed.
  • On-call Status - In the event of an emergency declared by the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Director, as needed to meet NAHLN requirements, overtime work or work outside normal operating hours will be required.
  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials - Exposure to formalin & formalin-fixed tissues. This position handles samples that may contain infectious agents and must follow PPE guidelines and appropriate standard operating procedures.
  • Special Requirements/Other - Must safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 50lbs. May be required to be rabies vaccinated upon hire and maintain protective titers (blood drawn on a schedule determined by CSU Occupational Health to evaluate status).

Responsibilities

  • Perform paperwork management, data entry, invoicing: This position will organize submission paperwork. The incumbent will perform data entry of accession information into the LIMS system and verify correct data/tests. Knowledge of test information, test schedules, and pricing information is essential. Scanning documents into appropriate accession and updating charges may be a function of this position. The incumbent may also be responsible for invoicing cases after laboratory personnel complete testing
  • Assist with receiving, accessioning, specimen routing, and package preparation and shipping: This position may open packages received by multiple methods, review submission form(s) to ensure all information is accurate, assign accession number(s), and route specimens with necessary form(s) to the appropriate area/section/laboratory. Submission documents must be scanned into LIMS system before routing. Incumbent will centrifuge specimens and handle blood, body fluids, urine and other samples, distributing them to appropriate laboratory sections. This position may be required to drive company vehicle for laboratory business, including package and specimen delivery/pickup to/from FedEx and UPS, carcass disposal to Mesa County Landfill and/or specified pet cremation facilities, and other laboratory business as necessary.
  • Perform laboratory support functions: This position will provide support services for multiple laboratory sections including but not limited to the following duties: organize, clean, and identify/verify specimens; create sample collection media; assemble sample collection kits; clean laboratory and common spaces; assist the veterinary diagnostician with post-mortem examination, carcass disposal, and necropsy lab cleaning; enter test results into database/LIMS system and perform case review; perform spreadsheet updates and maintenance; stock supplies; complete equipment logs (e.g., refrigerator/freezer temperatures); prepare outreach/education materials and presentations for various events
  • Other duties as assigned.
