About The Position

Pamlico Animal Hospital is a busy, small animal veterinary practice in Washington, NC, and we are looking for full-time, dependable, motivated individuals to join our team as veterinary assistants. Veterinary assistants play a critical role in patient care, animal handling, hospital cleanliness, and client communication. This is a physically demanding, fast-paced position that requires focus, efficiency, and the ability to multitask throughout the day. Working in veterinary medicine is rewarding, but it is also demanding. This is not a "puppies and kittens all day" position. It requires consistent hard work, emotional resilience, and attention to detail. You will encounter: Exposure to bodily fluids, feces, and strong odors, Potential bites and scratches, Exposure to contagious diseases, Busy days with shifting priorities and multiple responsibilities

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays
  • Strong work ethic and professional attitude
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Receptive to feedback and direction
  • Compassion toward animals and people
  • Strong communication and customer service skills

  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Typing speed of at least 35 WPM with 95% or greater accuracy

Responsibilities

  • Walk, feed, change litter, monitor hospitalized patients, and report changes in health or behavior
  • Safely and compassionately restrain patients, including anxious or aggressive animals
  • Disinfect cages, runs, treatment areas, equipment, floors, and yards to prevent the spread of disease; assist with laundry and dishes
  • Assist veterinarians during appointments; communicate clearly and professionally with clients
  • Collect and prepare lab samples (blood, urine, fecal, ear cytology); operate IDEXX equipment, assist with radiographs and cold laser therapy
  • Fill prescriptions, administer medications as directed, and provide client education per veterinarian's instructions
  • Accurately document treatments, manage billing, and maintain patient records in our electronic system
