The Veterinary Assistant at Palmetto Animal League Adoption Center and Clinic plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and lead technicians in providing high-quality care to animals. Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and lead techs in providing care and treatment to animals
- Handle and restrain animals during examinations and procedures
- Administer medications and vaccines as directed by the veterinarian
- Prepare animals for surgery, including shaving, cleaning, and sterilizing surgical sites
- Monitor animals before, during, and after surgery, ensuring their comfort and safety
- Perform laboratory tests, such as blood work and urinalysis, to assist in diagnosing illnesses or injuries
- Clean and maintain examination rooms, surgical areas, and equipment
- Provide basic grooming services, such as bathing and nail trimming
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care and answer their questions
- Learn veterinary software to check clients in, prepare invoices, and make appointments.
Requirements
- Some knowledge of animal behavior and handling techniques preferred
- Familiarity with common veterinary procedures and terminology preferred
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with staff and adopters
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail to ensure accurate record keeping and medication administration
- Physical stamina to lift heavy animals or equipment as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
