About The Position

As a Surgery Veterinary Assistant, you will play an essential role in supporting our surgical department and ensuring the highest level of patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. This position works closely with our board-certified surgeons and highly skilled veterinary team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a veterinary surgery department preferred
  • Knowledge of surgical terminology, sterile techniques, and anesthesia protocols
  • Skilled in anesthetic monitoring and patient support
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Positive, professional attitude with the ability to thrive in a busy, team-oriented environment
  • Commitment to professional development and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and the community

Nice To Haves

  • AVA (Approved Veterinary Assistant) certification preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team in preparing patients, equipment, and the surgical suite for procedures
  • Monitor patients before and after anesthesia under the direction of an RVT or veterinarian
  • Prepare, label, and submit blood and other diagnostic samples for laboratory testing as directed
  • Maintain knowledge of surgical instruments, materials, and equipment
  • Set up and maintain sterile fields under the supervision of an RVT or veterinarian
  • Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile environment, and providing patient support
  • Observe and report patient vital signs and behavior to the supervising RVT or veterinarian
  • Maintain accurate patient charts and surgical logs as directed
  • Provide comfort and care to patients throughout the surgical and recovery process
  • Ensure the surgical area remains clean, organized, and well-stocked at all times
  • Support safe handling and restraint of patients during induction, recovery, and postoperative care
