About The Position

Virginia Veterinary Center of Fredericksburg, VA is hiring a Veterinary Assistant to join our advanced and growing Surgery department. This position offers an opportunity for veterinary assistants looking to grow career-wise and professionally in an emergency setting. The ideal candidate will assist in various surgical and diagnostic procedures, maintain a clean and orderly surgical suite, and manage workflow for patient consultations and post-operative rechecks.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in veterinary medicine as an assistant.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and take direction.
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Actively enrolled in a veterinary technician program to obtain licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in induction and sedation of patients with a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
  • Prepare for the day by setting up the operating rooms with surgical supplies and appropriate materials needed for surgery.
  • Set up equipment and restrain patients for diagnostic imaging and other pre-operative diagnostics.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly surgical suite by cleaning prep areas and maintaining sterility.
  • Restock supplies throughout the day to ensure proficiencies and efficiencies.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the surgeon and LVT on duty.
  • Assist the surgeon within the surgical suite by performing sterile scrub techniques and providing surgical assistance.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of common soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of all surgical instruments and their appropriate care.
  • Manage workflow of new patient consultations and post-operative rechecks.
  • Perform accurate and professional discharging procedures for all post-operative patients.
  • Address phone calls and emails regarding client questions, concerns, and patient updates.
  • Order and maintain inventory of orthopedic supplies and instruments.
  • Work with the team to complete end of shift cleaning and other daily department responsibilities.
