About The Position

The Virginia Veterinary Center in Short Pump, VA is hiring a full- time Veterinary Assistant to join our Dentistry team! Position Overview: The Veterinary Assistant will provide support to the veterinarian and veterinary technician as directed within the Dentistry department; to provide professional and efficient client service.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6-months Kennel work or previous Veterinary Assisting Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Speaking directly with clients and other hospital team members, excellent communication skills is valuable and important
  • Ability to work in a team environment by taking direction and assisting other medical team members

Responsibilities

  • Collecting diagnostic samples (in house and outside laboratory submissions), imaging, and non-laboratory diagnostics (BP, EKG, SPO2) for analysis while understanding normal parameter markers to help facilitate in next steps of diagnostic preparation and communication to veterinarians.
  • Assist in conducting appointments, whether new patients or recheck appointments, and understanding the process and difference between the two types.
  • Assist Veterinarians and LVTs in the setup and cleaning of all daily procedures and operations. This includes assisting in physical exams, diagnostics, surgical prep, assisting in surgical procedure as needed, recovery care of patients post anesthetic episodes as needed, understanding side effects of anesthetic agents being administered, and sterilizing all instrumentation used during the day.
  • Help to restock supplies throughout the day to ensure proficiencies and efficiencies.
  • Conduct quarterly inventory counts as directed by Inventory Manager.
  • Perform daily, monthly, quarterly, annual maintenance on dentistry equipment as permitted by the manufacturer.
  • Practicing patient and empathetic client service skills when communicating with clients at all stages of their visit, such as intake, discharging, or providing medical updates on patients.
  • Properly discharge patients by filling all required non controlled medications, ensuring patients are clean and comfortable, removing intravenous catheters, auditing invoices as needed based off the current fee structure to ensure all charges are appropriate, approving final invoices, and reviewing discharges with pet owners.
  • Understanding and able to perform proper medical record documentation in accordance with hospital policy and the board of veterinary medical standards.
  • Conducting yourself professionally each shift while providing continued support to your team members, patients, and clients.
  • Assist in weekly inventory checks and notifying inventory manager of items that need replenishing
  • Following proper OSHA protocols and ensure OSHA related trainings are conducted by designated timelines to ensure a safe work environment for yourself and team members
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by leadership and direct supervisors while on shift
