About The Position

VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital is a 24-hour emergency, specialty, and primary care facility located in Downers Grove, IL. Our dedicated team provides advanced medical, surgical, and diagnostic services in a compassionate and collaborative environment. The Veterinary Assistant – Oncology supports our oncology technicians, doctors, and clients in delivering compassionate, high-quality cancer care to our patients. This position plays a vital role in both patient handling and client communication, ensuring seamless coordination within a busy, multidisciplinary hospital setting.

Requirements

  • Patient handling and restraint: Proven ability to safely manage and comfort animals of varying temperaments and medical conditions.
  • Client communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with empathy and professionalism when interacting with clients coping with serious diagnoses.
  • Animal husbandry: Strong understanding of animal care, nutrition, and behavior.
  • Medical record keeping: Attention to detail and proficiency in documenting patient care accurately.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Previous experience in a veterinary hospital, preferably specialty or emergency, highly desired.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior veterinary assistant experience preferred; oncology experience a plus.
  • Certification (CVT or AVA) not required but advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Assist oncology veterinary technicians and clinicians during patient evaluations, diagnostics, and treatments (including chemotherapy appointments).
  • Safely and effectively handle and restrain canine and feline patients for procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and preparation of oncology treatment areas, kennels, and exam rooms.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding promptly and professionally to client inquiries via voicemail, email, and task assignments.
  • Support patient care through proper feeding, cleaning, walking, and monitoring for comfort and well-being.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records in the hospital’s practice management system.
  • Assist in inventory management and restocking of oncology supplies and medications.
  • Follow all safety and biohazard protocols, especially related to chemotherapy handling.
  • Collaborate with other hospital departments to ensure continuity of care for oncology patients.
