About The Position

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Veterinarian in the Food Safety Division. This position (PIN #04000215) is in state government will work throughout the State of Oklahoma, duty station will be assigned based on selected candidate’s residence. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive Benefits Package , including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents. The hourly pay for this position is up to $51.44 based on education and experience. Basic Purpose/Position Description: This Veterinarian position is tasked as an Enforcement, Investigations, & Analysis Officer (EIAO). This position performs Veterinary Dispositions of suspected animals and carcasses as outlined in agency policies, state statutes and administrative rules relating to various licensing programs, emergency response programs, disease surveillance programs, and animal disease traceability programs.

Requirements

  • Level I: Education and experience required at this level consists of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine; licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Oklahoma.
  • Level II: Education and experience required at this level consists of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine; licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Oklahoma and two (2) years of professional veterinary experience.
  • Level III: Education and experience required at this level consists of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine; licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Oklahoma and five (5) years of professional veterinary experience.
  • Level IV: Education and experience required at this level consists of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine; licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Oklahoma and seven (7) years of professional veterinary experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon the employee successfully passing required training courses including the Inspection Methods (IM) Course, Public Health Veterinarian (PHV) or equivalent, and the Enforcement Investigations and Analysis Officer (EIAO) Course or equivalent in this position.
  • This position is subject to a twelve-month probationary period.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of animal disease presentations and their potential zoonotic and other public health impacts to include possible foodborne illness or other potential impacts to the animal agriculture industry.
  • Knowledge regarding sampling procedures for taking clinical samples to determine zoonotic and other public health impact.
  • Knowledge of all phases of meat inspection including slaughter operations, processing, and fabrication procedures.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules, processes, and procedures pertaining to meat and poultry operations and products; including the Oklahoma Meat and Poultry Inspection Act, Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Acts, State and Federal Regulations, and other State and Federal issuances.
  • Thorough knowledge of the basic operation principles of the regulated industry; including Sanitation Performance Standards (SPS), SSOP, HACCP, and Pathogen Reduction and Control, performing the Hazard Analysis Verification (HAV) Task, microbiological and economic sampling procedures of meat and poultry, and responsibilities of agencies with overlapping authority.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expert level evaluation, consultation, and training regarding humane handling and slaughter of livestock.
  • Provides instruction and training regarding animal disease signs and anatomy to meat inspection personnel statewide.
  • Performs advanced monitoring of state inspected and Talmadge-Aiken (TA) meat and/or poultry slaughter and/or processing establishments’; ensuring that establishments comply with State and Federal Laws and Regulations.
