About The Position

Animal Friends Humane Society is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join their dedicated team in Southwest Ohio. This full-time position involves providing high-quality veterinary care for a shelter population of nearly 6,000 animals annually. The veterinarian will work under the general direction of the Executive Director and will be responsible for performing surgical procedures, examining animals, and ensuring their health while they are in the shelter's care.

Requirements

  • DVM from an accredited university.
  • Current veterinary license in the state of Ohio.
  • Minimum two years' experience in veterinary medicine, with high-volume surgical sterilization experience preferred.
  • Interest in animal welfare and population control, serving underserved and at-risk populations.
  • Ability to work well in a hectic environment of an open admission shelter.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Interest in ABVP Shelter Medicine Practice category specialty certification encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery.
  • Perform surgical sterilizations and other surgical procedures as needed.
  • Examine animals post-op to ensure appropriate recovery.
  • Provide recommendations for follow-up care as needed.
  • Ensure the health of the shelter population.
  • Provide post-adoption veterinary services.
  • Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Enter medical data into the animal management system.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures as determined by the Humane Society.
  • Remain current on medical protocols regarding anesthesia, surgery, and shelter medicine through Continuing Education courses.
  • Promote spay and neuter programs and educate the public on responsible animal ownership.
  • Support humane society staff and volunteers.
  • Represent the humane society in a professional and courteous manner.
