About The Position

The Veteran Security and Safety Specialist (VSSS) ensures a safe, secure, supportive, and therapeutic environment while also providing mentorship and guidance to veterans to promote positive engagement, well-being, and safety. As part of a 24/7 team, responsibilities include patrolling the campus and conducting security rounds, monitoring activity, and responding to incidents. This role emphasizes verbal de-escalation, conflict resolution, and community engagement as first responses, with escalation to on-duty or on-call supportive service or clinical staff, supervisory staff, law enforcement, and other emergency services as needed and required. This is a no-touch position; staff are not expected to physically intervene in incidents. Working under the supervision of the Veteran Services Coordinator (VSC), the VSSS supports daily residential living and clinical services, promotes client independence, and contributes to U.S.VETS’ mission of ending and preventing veteran homelessness.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework preferred
  • One year of experience in social services, security, peer support, military services, law enforcement, or related field preferred
  • Valid driver’s license; must meet company insurance requirements and complete driver training
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation and complete onboarding documentation and required trainings prior to or upon hire
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in sensitive and high-pressure situations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and ability to use electronic case record systems
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including veterans with varying needs
  • Ability to stand, walk, and conduct rounds for extended periods
  • Ability to sit, bend, stoop, and reach as part of routine safety rounds and unit checks
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds occasionally (such as moving furniture) and properly use team assistance or equipment (dollies, carts) for heavier loads
  • Capability to operate vehicles and respond quickly and safely to incidents
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, including in-person, by radio, by telephone, and through video communication platforms
  • Ability to monitor live video feeds and surveillance systems to support campus safety

  • Peer Support Specialist certification (or willingness to obtain within 1 year of hire) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular safety rounds of residential and community-serving amenity spaces and maintain an active presence to support the well-being of residents and the safety of campus facilities
  • Maintain visibility and approachability, prioritizing verbal de-escalation and trauma-informed practices in conflict situations
  • Monitor entrances, exits, stairwells, and building floors to ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Collaborate with property management to monitor live video feeds and surveillance footage to ensure safety
  • Identify and report problematic behavioral issues for preventative measures
  • Respond promptly to incidents and emergencies, escalating to higher or more formalized measures only when necessary
  • Reinforce visitor policies, community rules, and program guidelines consistently and fairly
  • Drive and maintain campus vehicles for safety rounds, campus presence, and transportation purposes
  • Prepare and submit accurate incident reports and maintain required safety documentation, including mandate reporting requirements
  • Report to assigned shifts on time and conduct shift change briefings to ensure continuity of information
  • Maintain radio and/or phone communication with team members and supervisors at all times
  • Assist with campus fire, earthquake, or disaster drills and support emergency preparedness planning
  • Act as a peer mentor or support specialist modeling accountability, coping skills, and community responsibility
  • Conduct wellness checks to identify emergent or urgent safety needs in partnership with property management and the clinical team
  • Conduct monthly home visits with veterans to review resource needs, provide reminders of upcoming events, check rental payment status, and assess unit cleanliness and safety
  • Facilitate and encourage veterans in support groups, life skills classes, workshops, and monthly community meetings in each assigned building
  • Mediate conflicts constructively, focusing on restorative resolutions rather than punitive measures
  • Encourage participation in program activities and ensure veterans receive reminders and information about building- and campus-wide opportunities
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client files with same-day documentation in electronic records systems, in compliance with U.S.VETS standards and, when applicable, VA HUD-VASH regulations
  • Participate in trainings, case conferences, and consultations to enhance clinical skills and ensure continuity of care
  • Complete mandated reporting and related documentation as required
  • Assist with the lease-up of vacant units by helping veterans complete applications, collecting required documentation and signatures, and coordinating with the clinical team and property management
  • Support coordination of services by communicating observations and concerns to case managers and clinical staff in a timely manner
  • Assist in community-building events, outreach efforts, and resident councils
  • Other duties as assigned
