Your Impact The Vertex Epidemiology internship program is a multi-week experiential training program for students currently working towards an graduate degree in Epidemiology or Pharmacoepidemiology, or a related field of study. What you will be doing: The Clinical Epidemiology group is part of the Global Patient Safety Department and supports product development via contextualizing and evaluating safety events throughout the product lifecycle using epidemiological techniques, as well as leading and participating in epidemiological studies. This intern will focus on epidemiological research projects that support the company’s portfolio of products and therapeutic areas throughout the development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a graduate-level degree program in Epidemiology or Pharmacoepidemiology; alternatively, can be enrolled in a doctorate program in another discipline but with relevant training or work experience in epidemiological research (graduate-level degree program leading to a PhD in Epidemiology or Pharmacoepidemiology preferred, but MS/MPH students may be considered with relevant work experience as well as doctorate students in other fields but with equivalent training or experience in Epidemiology)
  • Completed at least two full years of graduate studies at the time of internship start date
  • Completed coursework or relevant training in epidemiological methods and biostatistics
  • Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills
  • Research experience
  • Strong knowledge about biological science/medical science
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary environment and manage multiple projects
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships or entry level roles within this part of the organization.
  • You must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before August 2026
  • You must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May – August 2026

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with administrative datasets (e.g., medical claims data, electronic health record data) desirable but not required

Responsibilities

  • Perform and author literature reviews on epidemiology of indications and potential safety signals
  • Contribute to daily activities related to post-approval regulatory studies including review of data as well as preparation of study reports, presentations, protocols, and statistical analysis plans
  • Contribute to regulatory documents such as Risk Management Plans (RMPs) and Periodic Safety Update Reports (PSURs)
  • Present research findings orally and in written documents
  • Shadow product lead epidemiologists to learn about the critical role and responsibility of epidemiology in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry
