About The Position

This position is responsible for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of all district vehicles and small equipment. Provide roadside assistance or recovery for district vehicles. Diagnose and repair: gas and diesel engines; drive trains; transmissions; suspension, steering, brake, and electrical systems. Maintain shop activities such as planning, scheduling, organizing, quality control, budgeting, warranty repair and evaluation, ordering and inventory of supplies and parts. Drive school bus on district routes as needed. Assist drivers when needed. May assist with custodial and grounds keeping duties. Develop and promote good community relations among stakeholders.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years on the job experience OR one (1) year job experience plus graduate of an accredited diesel mechanic school.
  • Mechanic fluency will be determined through the interview process.
  • Valid CDL with class B with Passenger & school bus endorsement required
  • Valid Department of Transportation, Brake Inspector Certificate
  • Valid Opacity Inspector License � May be obtained after hire
  • Valid CDE Inspector Certificate
  • Certified in emissions. ASE Certification required - May be obtained after hire
  • Valid First Aid Certification � May be obtained after hire
  • Operate assigned school bus/vehicle in accordance with federal, state, municipal and district regulations, policies, and laws.
  • Follow route directions, coordinate and maintain accurate descriptions of stop locations and times with Departmental Schedulers.
  • Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
  • Maintain student conduct that insures the safety of all students.
  • Issue written discipline reports as needed.
  • Perform pre and post route safety inspections on assigned vehicle.
  • Report all delays, accidents/incidents immediately to transportation management or appropriate authorities.
  • Monitor passengers for medical or behavioral problems.
  • Administer first aid and provide written reports as required.
  • Aid in loading and unloading passengers via the stairs or lift mechanisms including securing wheelchairs, mobility aids, oxygen bottles, band and athletic equipment, or luggage as required by route assignment and need.
  • Ensure restraints such as safety vests, seat belts, Child Safety Restraint Systems (CDRS), or other restraining devices are properly secured.
  • Collaborate with Director of Transportation or designee to accommodate requested route changes, concerns, or special requests.
  • Train passengers on proper emergency procedures in the event of an emergency.
  • Establish student, staff and parental rapport that allows for a proactive response to potential problems.
  • Actively participate in meetings, in-service, and other required training.
  • Apply and implement knowledge, skills and new understands to support Operations, Maintenance and Transportation.
  • May perform vehicle maintenance.
  • Performs a variety of physical maintenance tasks in and around the Duell Service Center, including climbing ladders to clean bus windows, using an air blower on the grounds, raking leaves, removing snow (including shoveling paths to ensure student access to buses), mopping, sweeping, cleaning and maintaining the office space.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Responsibilities

  • Vehicle maintenance � major and minor engine overhaul and repairs, tune up, transmission and differential repair and adjustment, air and hydraulic brake work.
  • Tire repair and replacement.
  • Road test vehicles for complaint verification and to ensure effective repair.
  • Report unsafe vehicles to Transportation Director or designee.
  • Track and evaluate warranty repairs to ensure cost savings to district.
  • Actively participate in PLCs and other required training.
  • Apply and implement knowledge, skills and new understandings to support Operations, Maintenance and Transportation.
  • Small equipment repair and maintenance � grounds and custodial equipment including tractors, floor machines, etc.
  • Will frequently cover bus routes, game routes and field trips as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
