About The Position

This position will function as a VERT III (Vehicle/ Equipment Repair Technician III) within the New Bern Equipment Shop in Craven County. This position will perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving advanced diagnostics and the use of computer diagnostic software to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of light, medium and heavy duty on and off-road equipment. Candidate must have the ability to perform the following, read and follow electrical and hydraulic schematics, possess the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects, follow and perform written and oral instructions, multi-task while maintaining focus, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Candidate must have the ability to perform preventative maintenance, repair, rebuild and diagnose mechanical and electrical systems on gasoline and diesel powered automotive, light, medium and heavy-duty on and off-road equipment. Work assignments will vary in complexity depending on the type of equipment and system. This candidate must be able to perform skilled mechanic work including but not limited to the following systems brakes, steering, tires and tubes, wheels, rims and hubs, transmission (auto and manual), charging systems, cranking systems, ignition systems, CAN BUS systems and associated control modules, lighting systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, instruments & gages, and air intake systems. This candidate will be responsible for completing fuel and lube inventory, assisting other technicians in troubleshooting, and completing more complex repairs, assisting supervisor, maintaining fuel site records and inspections per NCDOT and NCDENR requirements.

Requirements

  • Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities.
  • Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment.
  • Experience in the diagnostics and repair of powertrain components.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Responsibilities
