About The Position

NCDOT is looking for a highly motivated individual looking for a position with the potential of career advancement. This position will provide all state benefits including paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement. This role is a skilled mechanic position responsible for inspecting, servicing, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of small engines, automotive systems, and heavy equipment at the Mt. Pleasant Equipment Shop in Cabarrus County. The work includes everything from routine maintenance to complex mechanical and electrical troubleshooting using advanced diagnostic tools and software. The employee must interpret OEM manuals and schematics, determine appropriate repair methods, and safely operate equipment for testing. Tasks may involve engines, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, and specialized attachments. The job requires physical strength, the ability to follow written and verbal instructions, completion of repair documentation, and a strong commitment to workplace safety. Work occurs in both indoor and outdoor environments, and safety toe shoes are required. This position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Note: Selected candidate is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment
  • Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring
  • Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses
