About The Position

All previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II position in the Davidson County Equipment Sub Shop located in Davidson County. This is skilled mechanic work. The selected employee will perform a range of progressive tasks, involving services and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employee will perform mechanic work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. The employee must be able to perform skilled mechanical work such as preventive maintenance, tires and tubes, wheel and rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems. Employee is required to furnish a set of mechanics tools. Position requires work during adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee must have the ability to perform the duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Employee should have the ability to demonstrate a commitment to provide a safe working environment by leading by example. Employee should have the ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Additional Expectations: Safety-toed shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty, or farm equipment brake components.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
  • Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic software, tools, and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment.
