About The Position

Want to work in the world’s largest zoo? The North Carolina Zoo is growing and seeking a responsible team member to join our Transportation department. The transportation department is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating all aspects of transport operations within the zoo and transport services requested by the NC Zoo, Zoo Society and food services contractor.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment
  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen conducted by assigned provider.
  • Work schedule – typically 8 hour shifts, however transportation must stay until all guests have cleared the park
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule that involves working weekends, holidays and after hour special events. Special events include but are not limited to: day, evening, on park, off park and on occasion out of state.
  • Required to obtain a CDL Class B Driver’s License with a Passenger endorsement within one year of employment.
  • Required to consistently lift up to 50 lbs. going up and down trams and/or buses to assist guests with loading and/or unloading strollers, wagons, etc., with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Good communication skills to communicate with guests, co-workers and Zoo staff.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Class B CDL driver’s license with passenger endorsement
  • Experience driving in public-facing, high-passenger-volume environments, including transit systems, event transportation, or visitor attractions
  • Demonstrated experience working with the public in fast-paced, high-volume environments while maintaining positive and professional guest interactions

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of Zoo transport vehicles to safely move passengers, staff, guests, and cargo on and off Park grounds while complying with traffic regulations.
  • Provides professional guest services by greeting passengers, ensuring safe conduct, and delivering prepared narration during routes.
  • Conducts pre and post trip inspections, including checking tires, fluids, lights, brakes, hydraulics, and communication systems; reports issues and requests repairs as needed.
  • Maintains accurate logs, incident reports, and required paperwork; communicates with supervisors and Zoo personnel via radio as needed.
  • Loads and unloads cargo, assists with personal items such as strollers, wagons, ADA equipment and supports special event transportation needs.
  • Supports operational readiness by fueling vehicles, testing new equipment, and assisting in training transport staff on vehicle operation and Zoo policies.
