About The Position

The Vehicle Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues in vehicle systems. This role involves performing unit replacements, adjustments, and repairs required for state inspections. The mechanic ensures all work meets safety and operational standards while supporting a safe working environment for themselves and others.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from an accredited technical school in the automotive repair field with certification required.
  • In lieu of recent certification from accredited technical school in related field, one year of work experience in the repair of gas or diesel engines is an acceptable equivalent.
  • Must satisfactorily complete qualification tests.
  • Must satisfactorily complete performance test as required.
  • Must possess tools pertinent to occupation.
  • Must possess valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain CDL license at a later date.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and resolve common mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic problems in vehicle equipment.
  • Replace components such as diaphragms, slack adjusters, application valves, air hoses, front axle assemblies, quick release and relay valves, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
  • Perform unit replacements and adjustments to maintain optimal vehicle performance.
  • Adjust brakes and clutches to precise tolerances using feeler gauges (as fine as .002 inches).
  • Inspect assemblies for proper alignment and concentricity to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Adhere to all organizational and departmental safety and security policies.
  • Fulfill all job-specific safety responsibilities, reporting any concerns, hazards, or compromises that may impact operations, public safety, or employee well-being.
  • Take personal responsibility for safety and actively promote safe practices among colleagues.
