About The Position

Are you passionate about the intersection of cutting-edge technology and the built environment? Ryan Companies is looking for a forward-thinking VDC Engineer to join our team in Minneapolis, MN! The VDC Engineer – Self-Perform Concrete provides focused Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) support for Ryan’s self-perform concrete operations, with an emphasis on modeling, layout, and coordination for large-scale foundation and structural work. This role is responsible for accurate 3D modeling of concrete structures, including foundations, reinforcement, formwork, and embedded items, and for supporting field layout and coordination between design and construction teams. The VDC Engineer will collaborate closely with Superintendents, Project Engineers, and Field Layout Teams, leveraging technology to enhance precision, productivity, and safety in the field. Unlike traditional BIM coordination roles, this position is hands-on and field-integrated, requiring practical knowledge of concrete construction methods and sequencing alongside strong Revit modeling and field layout technology skills. Some things you can expect to do: Develop and maintain accurate Revit models representing foundations, reinforcement, formwork, and embedded items for self-perform concrete scope. Support field layout using Autodesk Point Layout and Trimble equipment, ensuring model-based data aligns with field conditions. Coordinate underground and foundation work between self-perform crews, design teams, and trade partners. Collaborate with project teams to ensure constructability and accuracy of modeled information before field execution. Maintain as-built models and update geometry to reflect changes from field conditions. Provide technical support to field and office teams for model usage, layout workflows, and drawing generation. Assist in developing model-based lift drawings, pour sequencing plans, and logistics layouts. Utilize the construction model to support staging, sequencing, and logistics planning. Support field operations with RFI responses, change management, and documentation of concrete work. Participate in project coordination meetings to review model progress, identify field challenges, and communicate with stakeholders. Maintain clear and organized documentation, including constraint logs and coordination notes. You will really stand out if you have Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering/Management, Architecture, or Engineering preferred. A 2-year degree with relevant field experience will be considered. 2+ years of experience in concrete construction, VDC, or field engineering. Demonstrated understanding of concrete placement, reinforcement, formwork, and layout processes. Proficiency in Revit for modeling foundations, slabs, walls, and rebar systems. Experience with Autodesk Point Layout and Trimble field layout systems. Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and construction documents. Strong understanding of field sequencing, tolerances, and constructability. Working knowledge of Autodesk Construction Cloud and Navisworks preferred. Ability to perform work accurately and efficiently in both office and field environments. Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills. Ability to communicate effectively with Superintendents, Foremen, and Project Engineers. Willingness to travel or work onsite as project needs require. Proficient communication, teamwork, time management, attention to detail, resilience under pressure, and commitment to Ryan values — Safety, Integrity, Respect, Stewardship, Family, Excellence, and Fun. Regular onsite presence is required to support field layout, coordination meetings, and as-built verification activities. Relationships, Results, Insights, Leadership, Valuing Differences (same as the standard VDC Engineer role).
