About The Position

Vascular Access Coordinator- RN Department: 34000 AMC Burlington - Administration: Nursing Status: Part time Benefits Eligible: No Hours Per Week: 12 Schedule Details/Additional Information: Two days/per week (Monday-Friday). Scheduling and hours flexible. Need to meet patient needs and Vascular Access enterprise meetings need to be attended. Pay Range $41.10 - $61.65 Major Responsibilities: Clinical Practice 1)Utilize the nursing process including assessment, analysis of issues, identification of expected outcomes, planning, implementation and evaluation. 2)Provides clinical consultation on patients to determine the recommended venous access device based upon current standards of care in consultation with the physician. 3)Inserts and monitors peripheral IV catheters and or peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) on selected candidates as ordered by the physician. 4)Performs advanced access skills such as difficult IV starts, therapeutic blood draws and de-clotting per established procedures. 5)Coaches beside RNs with regards to central venous line management. 6)Verify and witness informed consent for peripherally inserted central catheters. 7)Provides education to patients and families. 8)Provide accurate and complete documentation of patient care activities. 9)Uses nursing process for solving IV related patient care problems. 10)Demonstrates knowledge of intravascular access devices. Coordinate Compliance with Evidence Based Practice 1)Coordinate and oversee use and care of venous access devices throughout the organization with an interdisciplinary approach that includes disciplines such as nurses, physicians, radiology technicians and pharmacists. 2)Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to IV therapy and vascular access based on evidence based practice. 3)Works with medical staff leadership and nursing staff to develop and comply with appropriate use criteria. 4)Develop and implements audit tools for house wide surveillance of peripheral IV catheters and central venous catheters to ensure compliance with policy and procedure. 5)Evaluates associate and physician IV educational needs. 6)Develops and provides educational programs for associates and physicians. 7)Provides routine feedback to leadership related to IV practices as appropriate. 8)Serves as a resource and consultant for associates and physicians with regard to IV therapy assessment, access, maintenance, products and procedures. 9)Communicates progress toward established goals throughout the organization to groups such as Quality Council, Executive Leadership, Medical Staff Leadership, and Nursing Leadership. Adequate staffing plan is provided through the development of staffing plans and schedules. 1)Participates in the selection and development of qualified staff to meet the needs of the unit 2)Identifies performance issues, participates in developmental plans and disciplinary action as well as counseling and termination. 3)Provides coaching and mentoring for staff Coordinate Process Improvement to achieve Patient Safety/Health Outcomes 1)Develop goals, tactics and metrics annually related to IV therapy that support health outcomes, patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction and efficiency. 2)Collects data on infusion practices; utilization and patient outcomes to promote compliance with evidence based practices and established policies. 3)Summarize data and other findings related to IV therapy and develop action plans as needed with key stake holders. 4)Participates in research and /or quality improvement activities related to IV therapy and reports relevant information to appropriate departments. 5)Ensures compliance with infection control practices associated with venous devices. Professional Growth and Development 1)Keeps current on advances in IV therapy. 2)Participates in professional nursing organizations. 3)Assumes responsibility for identifying own learning needs and seeks and participates in educational opportunities to advance knowledge of IV therapy. 4)Utilizes knowledge to educate other members of the healthcare team, establish evidence based practices and promote positive patient outcomes. 5)Must maintain all certifications and licensure and perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree from accredited nurse program.
  • 2 years recent acute care experience
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Earn 10.0 continuing education credits annually
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Utilization of critical thinking and timely decision-making.
  • Use of advanced visualization technology such as ultrasound
  • Current RN license in the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification.
  • Training through an accredited PICC line course.
  • VA-BC/Vascular Access Certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Flexible hours according to customer needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered care.
  • Ability to prioritize independently and respond to multiple simultaneous requests.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints and in difficult situations.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life threatening diseases.
  • Ability to perform lifting / transfer activities related to patients (up to 50 lbs. may be required).
  • Ability to transport objects from one location to another.
  • This position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated.
  • Ability to communicate with patients/families and members of the healthcare team.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
  • Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
