About The Position

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary variable employees to supplement our permanent workforce. These variable employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency. The definition of a Variable Employee: •Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire. •Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less. •NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month). Under direct supervision, the Variable Beach Lifeguard I PTT is responsible for all lifeguarding and monitoring duties along the Clearwater Beach. Provides education, patron medical assistance, and ensures all safety measures are in place.

Requirements

  • A valid State driver's license is required
  • Must be 17 years of age or older
  • Must possess a valid First Aid Certification
  • Must possess a CPR Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers at time of appointment
  • Must be able to swim 500 meters in less than 10 minutes and run 1 mile in less than 18 minutes combined
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future visa sponsorship. City of Clearwater will not sponsor employment visas (e.g., H-1B, or any other work authorization status).
  • Knowledge of - Customer service and engaging with beach patrons, City beach programs, classes, and activities, Water rescue methods, specific first aid, and resuscitation techniques, Condition Flags, rip currents, beach safety, and ocean knowledge, First Aid, CPR, and general first responder care, General beach and aquatics policies and procedures, Computers and general office equipment
  • Skill in - Swimming and performing lifesaving skills, Basic first aid, backboarding, resuscitation, and AED, Engaging with patrons and providing customer care, Working with surrounding medical and safety agencies, Establishing good relationships with patrons and fellow staff, Operating a computer with proficiency; typing and software

Nice To Haves

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or completed a 40-hour minimum lifeguard training program with an organization certified by the United States Lifesaving Association is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Guards, monitors, and watches beach patrons swimming, on the beach, and bathing in the water; ensures all safety standards and rules are upheld; performs lifesaving techniques, first aid, and skilled emergency response.
  • Patrols beach area on foot, ATV, work mule, personal watercraft, and through stationing in an observation tower; scans beach for persons in dangerous situations, in need of assistance, and for hazardous weather.
  • Prepares and manages the guard tower; monitors the supply of medical supplies, properly display's condition flags, keeps all documents up to date, and keeps status board current for beach goers.
  • Educates, engages, and communicates with the public regarding beach and water conditions; ensures all wildlife, rip current, weather, and environmental topics are clearly stated and communicated; educates the public on various city events.
  • Recognizes patrons in need of medical attention and lifesaving; performs skills effectively and timely, treats patients accordingly, and contacts the necessary authorities or medical personnel based on situation.
  • Assists, supports, and helps parents and police department in the event of a missing child; provides professional care and beach knowledge.
  • Performs basic first aid and CPR; remains up to date on newest safety information; provides care using calm skill and timely action; enforces rules and safety regulations of the Clearwater Beach; identifies and addresses areas of violation with tact and professionalism.
  • Handles various radio communications for fast and effective response to emergencies; makes calm and quick decisions to maintain order and address health and medical needs of the public; documents all medical and trauma events.
  • Maintains peak physical condition and fitness; swims, runs, and paddles rescue boards; works in extreme environmental conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
