About The Position

Markforged (NYSE: MKFG) is leading the digital transformation of manufacturing by revolutionizing how engineers and manufacturers create and innovate. Our unique platform combines software, advanced materials (including cutting-edge metal and composite technologies), and industrial 3D printers to deliver strong, functional parts for various industries. We empower customers to overcome supply chain complexities, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation by producing high-performance tools, fixtures, prototypes, and end-use parts in-house. The Value Engineer is responsible for developing accurate, bottoms-up cost models for mechanical and electrical components and assemblies. This role reviews engineering drawings, CAD, and BOMs to estimate “should-cost” targets based on manufacturing processes, material selection, complexity, and production volumes. The Value Engineer partners with engineering, operations, and supply chain to validate designs, evaluate supplier quotes, and identify high-quality suppliers when needed. Key goals to assess and identify design and manufacturing processes improvements, enhance internal and partner supplier processes, and partner with internal teams implement changes to reduce costs while ensuring compliance with cosmetic, quality and safety standards. Lead cross-functional projects and interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for mechanical and electrical components
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and CAD models
  • Experience building bottom-up cost models and analyzing supplier quotes
  • Strong analytical and communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • experience in capital equipment, industrial products, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or advanced manufacturing
  • exposure to global supply chains and contract manufacturing
  • familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and cost accounting concepts
  • prior experience working with suppliers in USA, Asia, and Europe

Responsibilities

  • Review bills of materials, engineering drawings, and CAD models to understand part geometry, tolerances, materials, and functional requirements
  • Develop detailed should-cost models for mechanical and electrical components, including:
  • Machining, casting, sheet metal, additive, and finishing processes
  • PCBAs, cables, harnesses, and electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Estimate labor, material, overhead, yield, tooling, and amortization costs across different volume scenarios
  • Compare supplier quotes against should-cost models and identify cost gaps or risk areas
  • Collaborate with engineering on design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-cost (DFC) tradeoffs
  • Support supplier identification, technical evaluation, and RFQ processes when required
  • Partner with supply chain and operations to align cost models with real manufacturing constraints
  • Maintain cost databases, benchmarks, and process assumptions over time
  • Provide clear cost breakdowns and recommendations to engineering leadership and management
