About The Position

The Vac Truck Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating vacuum excavation equipment to perform test holes (potholing) on underground utilities. This role supports construction and utility locating activities by exposing buried infrastructure using non-destructive methods. The Vac Truck Operator ensures all work is completed in compliance with safety standards, customer requirements, and project specifications. This position requires strong situational awareness, adherence to safety protocols, and effective communication with field teams and supervisors. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years of experience operating vacuum excavation trucks or similar heavy equipment.
  • Valid CDL (Class A or B) with clean driving record strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of underground utility systems, construction practices, and safe digging procedures.
  • Ability to read utility markings, maps, and jobsite documentation.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards and traffic control requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and stand for extended periods.
  • Excellent communication, situational awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vacuum excavation trucks to dig test holes and expose underground utilities using safe, non-destructive techniques.
  • Perform potholing, trenching, debris removal, and soil extraction as required by project scope.
  • Set up and break down equipment at job sites, ensuring proper operation and maintenance.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and functional equipment, reporting mechanical issues promptly.
  • Excavate around marked utilities with precision to avoid damage to underground infrastructure.
  • Measure, record, and document utility depth, location, and condition per project requirements.
  • Assist field teams with verification of utility markings and coordinate with utility locators as needed.
  • Ensure accurate completion of daily logs, test hole reports, and equipment usage records.
  • Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies, including confined space, traffic control, and PPE requirements.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, hazard assessments, and jobsite safety briefings.
  • Maintain safe work zones, including proper placement of cones, signage, and barriers.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents to supervisors.
  • Work closely with field supervisors, utility locators, and construction crews to support project needs.
  • Communicate clearly regarding job progress, site conditions, and potential conflicts or hazards.
  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure test holes are completed on schedule and meet quality expectations.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters, checking fluid levels, and inspecting hoses.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance field operations.
  • Support training efforts for new operators or laborers assisting with vacuum excavation tasks.
